The HIV/AIDS Certified LPN/LVN (ACLPN) certification validates the knowledge and skills of LPNs and LVNs working in the specialized care of patients with HIV and AIDS. The HIV/AIDS Nursing Certification Board (HANCB) offers the ACLPN certification.

Course Format

The ACLPN certification includes 25 learning modules with associated quizzes. To complete each module, the applicant must answer 4 out of 5 quiz questions correctly and complete the survey. HANCB grants certification after completion of the curriculum within 6 months. The curriculum is based on the National HIV Curriculum and includes:

  • Screening and Diagnosis

  • Basic HIV Primary Care

  • Antiretroviral Therapy

  • Co-Occurring Conditions

  • Prevention of HIV

  • Key Populations

Certification

Eligibility

To be eligible to earn the ACLPN certification, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Hold an active LPN/LVN license in the U.S. or the equivalent in another country

  • Have a minimum of 2 years of experience in clinical practice, management, or research related to HIV/AIDS

Renewal

ACLPN certification is valid for 4 years. To be eligible for renewal, applicants must:

  • Complete 50 Continuing Education Points (CEPs), 80% must be in HIV/AIDS care

  • Submit an application

  • Pay the renewal fee

Renewal Fee: $100

Continuing Education

Renewal applicants must accrue a minimum of 50 CEPs during the 4-year cycle.

  • Category 1: HIV/AIDS Nursing Continuing Education (minimum of 25 CEPs)

  • Category 2: Other Continuing Education in Nursing (maximum of 12 CEPs)

  • Category 3: Academic Credit Courses (maximum of 25 CEPs)

  • Category 4: Professional Activities (maximum of 10 CEPs)
