About

The Board Certified - Advanced Diabetes Management (BC-ADM) certification validates the knowledge and skills of healthcare providers working in advanced diabetes management. The Association of Diabetes Care and Education Specialists (ADCES) offers the BC-ADM exam, accredited by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).

Eligibility

To be eligible to take the BC-ADM exam, applicants must meet one of the following license and education requirements:

  • An active RN or advanced practice nursing license with a master’s degree or higher in a related educational, clinical, or management area

  • An active dietitian license or registration with a master’s degree or higher in a related area

  • An active pharmacists license with a master’s degree or higher in Pharmacy

  • An active Physician Assistant license with a master’s degree or higher in a related educational, clinical, or management area

  • An active MD or DO license with an MD or DO degree

In addition, applicants must have completed 5oo clinical practice hours within the previous 48 months of application.

Completion Time: Candidates have about 3 hours to complete the BC-ADM exam

  • Non-member initial: $900

  • ADCES member retake: $220

  • Non-member retake: $340

Course Format

Exam Format

The BC-ADM exam includes 150 scored questions and 25 unscored questions. Candidates have 3 hours and 3 minutes to complete the exam. BC-ADM exam topics include:

  • Assessment and Diagnosis (30%)

  • Planning and Intervention (34%)

  • Evaluation and Follow-up (23%)

  • Population Health, Advocacy, and Professional Development (14%)

Test Dates

Scantron Test Centers offer BC-ADM exams Monday through Saturdays between June 1-30 and December 1-31. Examinees may also take the exam at home via Scantron’s live online proctored test administration service.

Register for the Exam

Applicants receive a Notice to Schedule Examination email from Scantron 30 days before the testing window. They can register online or by calling Scantron at (919) 572-6880.

  • Enter the username and password provided in the Notice to Schedule email

  • Follow the on-screen instructions

Exam Day Instructions

  • Arrive at the testing center 15 to 30 minutes before exam time

  • Bring a government-issued photo ID

    • Applicant’s name must exactly match the name Scantron has on file

  • Bring printed confirmation email

    • Examinees may not bring personal items, calculators, phones, notes, food, or beverages into the test center

For remote proctored exams, applicants must use a computer with a camera, microphone, and internet connection. Review details for system requirements. Applicants can take a sample test to become familiar with Scantron software.

  • Enter the username and password provided in the Notice to Schedule email

  • Confirm demographic information

  • Attest to Scantron’s privacy policy

  • Test computer for system requirements

  • Click “Schedule” 

  • Enter phone number and time zone

  • Click “Schedule Exam”

  • Select a date and time and click “Schedule”

Exam Day Instructions

  • Click the link in the confirmation email to go to the Scantron platform

    • The system performs a System Requirement Check

  • Complete the check-in process with an ID check and environment check

    • A live proctor performs a security check

    • Examinees must be alone, in a well-lit space, with the computer on a table or desk

    • Examinees must not use a dual-monitor or sit in a reclined position

    • The live proctor remains present throughout the test for questions

Examinees receive an email from Scantron 6 to 8 weeks after the close of the testing window with exam results and instructions for accessing Scantron’s Score Report Portal.

Application Process

The application deadline is May 1 for June exams and November 1 for December exams, but ADCES accepts applications until May 15 and November 15 for an additional $50 late fee.

  • Attach copy of transcripts or diploma, if applicable

  • Click “I agree” next to Verification of Information

  • Insert membership information, if applicable

  • Insert payment information

Applicants receive a confirmation notice of eligibility within 5 business days of application submission.

Renewal

BC-ADM certification is valid for 5 years. Renewal applicants are encouraged to apply for renewal at least 6 months before expiration and no later than 30 days before expiration. To be eligible for renewal, applicants must:

  • Hold an active RN, RD, RPh, PA, or MD/DO license in the U.S. or the legal equivalent in another country 

  • Hold a current BC-ADM certification

  • Have 1,000 hours of practice in advanced diabetes management during the 5-year certification period

  • Complete the professional development requirements

  • Pay the renewal fee

To renew certification:

  • Log into Scantron account

  • Check the box for “Renewal”

  • Insert demographic information

  • Insert license information

  • Upload a copy of professional license

  • Select the 2 professional development categories and enter corresponding information

  • Enter professional practice hour information

  • Click “I agree” next to Verification of Information

  • Insert membership information, if applicable

  • Insert payment information

Renewal Fees

  • ADCES member renewal: $500

  • Non-member renewal: $800

Continuing Education

Renewal applicants must complete 2 out of 6 professional development categories. Categories 1-5 may be doubled, but category 6 can’t be doubled.

  1. Continuing Education (75 contact hours)

  2. Academic Credits (5 semester credits or 6 quarter credits)

  3. Presentations (Presentation time of 5 hours)

  4. Publication (One article, primary author, or grant writer) or Research (IRB project, content reviewer, or completed dissertation, thesis or graduate level scholarly project)

  5. Preceptor (120 hours)

  6. Professional Service (100 hours)

Frequently asked questions

What if I fail the BC-ADM exam?

If you fail the BC-ADM exam, you may retake it for a non-member fee of $340 or ADCES fee of $220. You can’t take the exam more than twice in 12 months, and if the examinee fails twice, they must skip the third examination window.

Can I still renew the BC-ADM if my certification expired?

Yes, you have 90 days after expiration to renew your BC-ADM certification with an added $50 late fee. After 90 days, you have to reapply and retake the exam.

Do I have to print the confirmation email even if I’m taking the BC-ADM remotely?

Yes, you must print the printed confirmation email for both in-person and remote proctored BC-ADM exams.

Can I cancel or reschedule the BC-ADM?

Yes, you can reschedule your BC-ADM exam up to 2 days before your exam date on the Scantron website. Scantron charges a non-refundable $50 rescheduling fee.

Can I take the BC-ADM in person from outside the U.S.?

Yes, you can take the BC-ADM exam internationally and in person with an additional scheduling fee of $150.

Can I still schedule the BC-ADM if I miss the application deadline on May 1 or November 1?

Yes, applicants have until May 15 or November 15 to submit their application, but ADCES charges a $50 late fee in addition to the cost of the exam.
