BS (ARRT) - Breast Sonography RT

The Breast Sonography RT (BS) certification is a specialized credential for radiologic technologists with expertise in breast ultrasound. This certification, often offered by organizations like the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT), signifies proficiency in using sonographic equipment to perform and interpret breast ultrasounds. The certification is designed for technologists who aim to provide high-quality breast imaging services, aiding in the early detection and diagnosis of breast diseases.

Exam Format

The BS exam includes 225 multiple-choice questions (185 scored, 40 unscored) presented in random order. Topics cover breast anatomy, physiology, pathology, sonographic techniques, and interpretation of results.

The exam assesses both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in breast sonography.

A passing scaled score of 75 is based on the number of correct answers you give, ranked by ARRT’s scaled scoring model.

Eligibility criteria include certification in a primary radiologic technology discipline and documented clinical experience in breast sonography.

The application process involves submitting proof of clinical competency and educational qualifications.

If unsuccessful on the exam, candidates can reapply following the certifying organization's reexamination policies.

Breast Sonography RTs must renew their credentials every year, complete continuing education every 2 years and fulfill continuing qualification requirements every 10 years. Annual renewal requirements include being current on your biennial continuing education (CE) requirements. The annual renewal deadline is always the last day of your birth month and can be completed online.

Starting in January 2026, ARRT will set a standard renewal fee of $65, which applies regardless of the number of credentials held.

Maintaining Breast Sonography RTs certification requires 24 hours of continuing education (CE) every 2 years. Report CE activities every 2 years by the last day of the month prior to your birth month every other year as part of the annual renewal process. Your CE deadline and annual renewal deadline are different dates.
