The Certified Anesthesia Technologist (Cer.A.T.T.) credential, offered by the American Society of Anesthesia Technologists and Technicians (ASATT), is a professional certification for individuals specializing in advanced roles in anesthesia technology. This certification recognizes a higher level of knowledge and skill in assisting with anesthesia care, including equipment preparation and maintenance, patient monitoring, and advanced assistance during anesthesia procedures.

Cost: $225 for active ASATT members, $450 for non-members. For applicants outside of the U.S., $450 for active ASATT members, $550 for non-members.

Course Format

Exam Format

The ASATT exam is administered at secure Scantron assessment centers located throughout the United States.

The Cer.A.T.T. exam consists of 125 items covering theoretical knowledge and practical skills related to advanced anesthesia technology.

Topics may include anesthesia equipment and procedures, pharmacology, patient monitoring, troubleshooting, and safety protocols.

Certification

Eligibility and Certification Requirements

There are three ways to earn the Technologist certification in Anesthesia Technology. The first way is to complete a CAAHEP accredited / CoA-ATE approved program and pass the Technologist exam. This option is suitable for those who are just starting their career in Anesthesia Technology. 

The second way is for those uncertified individuals who have several years of experience and are interested in pursuing certification. They can take the Practical Experience Pathway.

The third way is available for Certified Anesthesia Technicians who are in good standing. They can sit for the Technologist certification exam by completing the Advancement Program.

Certification Process

Submit an application to ASATT, demonstrating eligibility through education and clinical experience.

Pass the Cer.A.T.T. examination, which assesses advanced knowledge and skills in anesthesia technology.

Renewal

Cer.A.T.T. certification requires renewal every two years on December 31st. After becoming certified or recertified, individuals must earn continuing education credits within their two-year certification period.

Individuals holding the Cer.A.T.T. certification must earn 30 CEUs during their two-year certification period. The recertification fee is $100 for ASATT members and $450 for non-members.

Cer.A.T.T. certification holders have 3 options for renewal:

Option 1Online (Members with CEs already in database)

  • Starting November 1, ASATT members who already have all CEs recorded in the database can renew online.

  • Payment must be made by credit card.

Option 2 – Online (Upload CEs + Credit Card Payment)

  • For members who need to upload CE documentation, online recertification is available (credit card required).

  • Third-party CEUs must be individually approved, and applicants pay a processing fee:

    • .25–10.75 CEUs: $10 per CE

    • 11–15.75 CEUs: $15 per CE

    • 16–20.75 CEUs: $20 per CE

    • 21–25.75 CEUs: $25 per CE

    • 26–30 CEUs: $30 per CE

  • Estimated total cost if all CEUs are third-party, excluding the recertification fee is $275

  • BLS, ACLS, and PALS courses from AHA or Red Cross are exempt from processing fees if accredited.

Option 3 – Mail-in with Check

  • The recertification form is available online on November 1st.

  • Submit by mail the application form, copy of database recertification record, proof of any missing CEs, and correct recertification fee with check.

  • Late packets (after December 31) must include an additional $75 late fee.

Continuing Education

Continuing education is essential for maintaining certification and staying current with advancements in anesthesia technology.

This may include attending advanced workshops, seminars, and conferences, or completing online courses relevant to the field.
