About

The Certified Wound Specialist (CSW) is offered by the American Board of Wound Management (ABWM). The Certified Wound Specialist board certification provides formal recognition of masters-level expertise in the specialty of wound care.

Eligibility for CWS

Candidates must possess a professional license with at least 3 years of clinical experience in wound care. Examples include registered nurses, podiatrists, physical therapists, PharmD, physician assistants, and more.

Applying for the CWS Examination

Applicants must create an account through the ABWM website to complete the online application. Allow a minimum of 10 business days to process the application.

Once approved, the applicant will receive an email notification directly from the testing company, Pearson VUE which will include information on how to schedule the exam.

The exam may be scheduled within the next 90 days and is based on availability at the testing center you choose.

Fees

  • Initial application and examination: $575

  • Reexamination fee: $275

  • International testing fee: $175

Course Format

Exam Format

The examination is computer-based and consists of 150 multiple-choice questions (including 25 non-scored pre-test questions) with 3 hours allowed for testing. 

Scores will display immediately after completing the exam and can also be accessed by logging into your Pearson VUE account.

Certification

Renewal

CWS certification must be renewed annually. All renewals are due by the end of January each year. Renewal consists of completing at least 6 hours of continuing education specific to wound management and paying the $150 renewal fee.

Every 10 years after initial certification, certified wound specialists must recertify by examination. The application process and fee are the same as for the initial examination of $575.
