COURSE FORMAT

About

In the field of psychology, the role of the marriage and family therapist (MFT) serves as a support to clients seeking assistance with individual or family concerns. The MFT profession provides a meaningful and important role in healthcare for individuals with a drive to support clients through difficult life events or mental health concerns.

The MFT role, including licensure, is maintained by the state of practice. After completing an accredited graduate degree program, the MFT must complete the requirements for the MFT exam, often offered by the Association of Marriage and Family Therapy Regulatory Boards (AMFTRB) in the state of licensure. Some states use the Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) credential.

Certification

Each state has different pathways to obtaining MFT licensure. However, the most common requirements are:

  • A graduate degree in marriage and family therapy, or a related topic with equivalent coursework, from an accredited program. Must include a supervised clinical practicum or internship, with a minimum number of hours, including specific direct client contact hours.

  • A passing score on the exam(s) approved by the board.

  • Completion of post-degree supervised clinical experience as an MFT.

  • A minimum number of supervised direct client contact hours, some of which must be with couples and families.

The AAMFT has a listing of the specific requirements for each state and province in Canada.

MFT programs are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE).

Renewal

The MFT license should be renewed according to the rules of the state of practice. The majority of states require reveal every 2-3 years and require submission of continuing education activities to the state licensing board.

Other Resources

Each state determines its fees to issue the MFT license. Some states will accept licenses from other states, but others will not. In addition, the number of hours of direct client care can vary greatly.

The COAMFTE offers an accreditation process that list the steps to achieve and maintain the MFT credential, and study resources.
