Responsibilities
Unit Overview
The Intermediate Care Unit (IMC) / Progressive Care Unit (PCU) provides specialized care for patients who require a higher level of monitoring and intervention than a medical-surgical floor but do not meet criteria for intensive care.
Patients in this unit often present with complex cardiac, respiratory, and post-surgical conditions requiring:
- Continuous telemetry monitoring
- Frequent nursing assessments and interventions
- Advanced medication management and titration
- Rapid response readiness
This unit serves as a critical step-down environment designed to stabilize patients and support recovery while maintaining close observation.
Position Summary
The Registered Nurse (RN) in the IMC/PCU is responsible for delivering high-quality, patient-centered care to acutely ill patients. This role requires strong clinical judgment, the ability to manage complex patient conditions, and collaboration with interdisciplinary care teams.
The RN will assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care while ensuring adherence to clinical standards and safety protocols in a dynamic healthcare setting.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver comprehensive nursing care to IMC/PCU patients with complex medical conditions
- Monitor cardiac rhythms, vital signs, and patient status; respond to changes promptly
- Administer medications, treatments, and therapies per physician orders and clinical protocols
- Utilize advanced monitoring equipment and participate in rapid response situations
- Collaborate with physicians, specialists, and interdisciplinary teams to plan and implement care
- Educate patients and families regarding treatment plans, medications, and discharge instructions
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the electronic medical record (EMR)
- Adhere to hospital policies, procedures, and quality standards
Qualifications
Required:
- Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in Washington, DC (or eligibility)
- BSN preferred (ASN considered with commitment to obtain BSN)
- BLS and ACLS certification (current)
- Minimum 1 year of acute care experience (IMC, PCU, Telemetry, or ICU preferred)
Preferred:
- Experience with cardiac monitoring and telemetry
- Strong clinical judgment and critical thinking skills
- Excellent communication and teamwork abilities
