Responsibilities:The Certified Wound Ostomy nurse (CWON) is responsible for managing patients in the inpatient and outpatient setting with ostomy, wound and/or complex skin management needs. Referrals come from providers, nurses and other health team members. The CWON assesses, plans, implements and evaluates the care of these patients relative to their wound, ostomy and complex skin needs. The CWON provides expert consultation to team members, coordination of services and education for patients, families and the health team. Service areas include both inpatient and outpatient settings.
The Certified Wound Ostomy Nurse is competent in the knowledge and skills in the following treatment and care:
- Evaluation and treatment of chronic/acute wounds utilizing evidence-based treatment modalities (negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT), post-operative surgical wound Is management, conservative sharp debridement, ultrasonic mist therapy)
- Evaluation and treatment of draining and infected wounds and fistulas
- Pre-Ostomy counseling and site marking
- Post-Ostomy teaching and appliance selection
- Evaluation and treatment of peri-stomal skin problems
- Compression wraps for venous stasis and non-healing lower leg wounds
- Patient and family teaching
Education:
- BSN required.
Experience:
- Minimum 1 year nursing experience in acute care or clinical setting caring for patients with complex skin, wound or ostomy needs; 2 years preferred.
Skills:
- Demonstrated ability of positive interpersonal and communication skills with colleagues, patients, families, physicians and the community.
- Keyboard skills and ability to navigate electronic systems applicable to job functions.
- Current applicable state RN license required.
- Current Wound, Ostomy Certification by the Wound Ostomy and Continence Nursing Certification Board (WOCNCB) required.
- BLS for Healthcare Providers from the American Heart Association required.
