Responsibilities
The Registered Nurse (RN) in this dynamic multidisciplinary clinic collaborates daily with physicians, advanced practice providers, RNs and other allied health care staff members to provide care through a team approach for patients traveling from the region, across the nation, or internationally to Mayo Clinic Rochester. The GIH Hepatobiliary Clinic cares for patients who have a diagnosis or need management of complex hepatobiliary diseases.
In the GIH Hepatobiliary Clinic, the RN provides direct care to patients utilizing face to face onsite visits, patient visits via telehealth video or phone, and indirect, non-visit care. Patient visits may include a review of patient health issues, medication review and patient education. Non-visit care and management of patients occurs within the EHR (electronic health record) and over the phone. In this capacity, RNs provide patient education, medication management, follow-up care, outcome management, phone triage and assessment of patient symptom-based inquiries. This can specifically include lab monitoring for HB/Hep C patients as well and ordering and assisting with scheduling of paracentesis procedures. Innovative responsibilities include monitoring patients enrolled in the Cirrhosis Interactive Care Plan and identifying admitted cirrhosis patients that should be enrolled in the Remote Patient Monitoring program. This role requires expert critical thinking, time management, multi-tasking, flexibility, and the ability to function autonomously in an unpredictable environment. There may be an opportunity for hybrid/remote work after successful completion of orientation and training.
The RN in the GIH Hepatobiliary Clinic works collaboratively with the specialized multidisciplinary care team to provide high quality systematic care for patients. The ANA Standards of Clinical Nursing Practice and the AAACN Ambulatory Care Nursing Administration and Practice Standards provide a basis for the practice of the registered nurse in the ambulatory setting. The RN must possess excellent communication and critical thinking skills, be able to independently practice in accordance with procedural guidelines, be skillful in mentoring and teaching, actively participate on committees or projects and function within the Mayo Nursing Care Model ( http://nursing.mayo.edu/nursing-care-model/), which includes accountability for planning, implementing, evaluating, and communicating all phases of nursing care for patients. The RN supports professional nursing practice across practice settings and across the continuum of care to meet the needs of the patient and family.
For New Graduate Nurses: Please apply through the Nurse Residency Program posting, which is specifically designed to support new graduate RNs. Visit the Nurse Residency webpage for program details including current and upcoming application windows. Within the Nurse Residency application process, you may indicate work units and specialties of interest. If selected to move forward, you will meet with a Nursing Placement Coordinator who will help you explore Mayo Clinic opportunities that are best aligned with your current and future professional goals. Together, we’ll identify a work area that provides an excellent foundation for your nursing career.
The registered nurse (RN) is accountable for the coordination of nursing care, including direct patient care, patient/family education and transitions of care. The RN supports professional nursing practice across practice settings and across the continuum of care to meet the needs of the patient and family. The RN will function within the Mayo Clinic Nursing Professional Practice Model, which includes accountability for planning, implementing, evaluating and communicating all phases of nursing care for assigned patients. The ANA Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice provide a basis for the practice of the RN. The RN provides leadership through activities such as preceptor role, informal and formal leadership roles, and quality improvement efforts. The RN delegates patient care according to skill level, experience, patient acuity, fiscal accountability and availability of resources. The RN possesses excellent communication skills; is skillful in mentoring and teaching; and may participate on committees or projects. A subset of employees may be required to drive their personal vehicle as a part of the responsibility of their role.
