Job Summary and Qualifications

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Registered Nurse working within the Heart and Lung Center who demonstrates critical thinking skills, scientific judgment and leadership in planning for the care of the patient. The Registered Nurse is responsible and accountable for the planning, directing and provision of nursing care to patients in accordance with the N.H. Nurse Practice Act, recognized nursing techniques and both clinical and administrative policies.

Works collaboratively with physicians to deliver non-invasive testing to patients, performs patient education and documentation of same.

SPECIFIC ELEMENTS & ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

A. ASSESSMENT OF THE PATIENT

In collaboration with the physician or designee

1. Recognizes untoward responses to testing and communicates same.

2. Recognizes clinical problems that require immediate intervention.

3. Able to integrate clinical information to obtain test results.

B. PATIENT RIGHTS AND ORGANIZATIONAL ETHICS

1. Constantly assures privacy during testing.

2. Consistently provides for patient comfort during testing.

C. LEADERSHIP

1. Provides support to unit personnel as appropriate

2. Enhances the ability of every other member of the Department to do his/her job better by means of cooperation, extending a helping hand, demonstrating awareness of the “next step” in every process, displaying sensitivity through actions to the needs and workloads of other members of the department, supporting and assisting departmental co-workers at all times.

3. Responds in a positive manner. Demonstrates flexibility and encouragement with implementing change. Supports Director, hospital and department missions. Performs similar or related duties as required.

D. EDUCATION

1. Evaluates patient’s learning needs during diagnostic testing.

2. Provides education to patient regarding test procedure and answers questions.

3. Provides follow-up instructions after testing as needed.

4. Documents patient teaching.

5. Calls patients with testing instructions the day before and checks for correct orders in online order system.

E. MANAGEMENT OF INFORMATION

1. Uses computer systems accurately.

F. IMPROVING ORGANIZATIONAL PERFORMANCE

1. Participates in and supports initiatives. Incorporates safety processes into daily practice.

2. Supports and participates in continuous quality improvement efforts for the department and cardiology services as requested.

3. Represents department staff in house wide QA/Committee activities as requested by the Director.

G. JOB SPECIFIC SKILLS

1. Administers graded exercise tests in the clinical setting to assess the patients ability to tolerate increases in exercise while EKG, hemodynamic and symptomatic responses are monitored for manifestations of myocardial ischemia, electrical instability, or other exertional related abnormalities.

2. Administer Lexiscan per protocol for pharmacological stress test when ordered

3. Serve as a clinical resource for physicians and department staff

4. Plans, organizes, and coordinates with multiple departments to expedite effective inpatient and outpatient flow.

5. Independently apply, analyze, and generate reports for Holter monitors per protocol.

6. Maintain department and work area in a clean and organized manner. Exercises care with equipment operation and has a working knowledge of all equipment.

7. Maintains department logs, and schedules. Demonstrates effective organizational and time management skills.

8. Anticipates the needs of patients & families and is self-directed in the completion of these tasks.

9. Cheerfully greets, assists and directs all patients, families and visitors.

10. Demonstrates accountability for assembling and maintaining neat, current, and proper patient charts at all times.

11. Accurately analyzes and interprets rhythms and has appropriate follow through.

12. Assists in maintaining adequate inventory of supplies and inputs charges in a timely and accurate manner.

13. Demonstrates confidence and understanding of coronary anatomy and physiology, cardiac specific medications and cardiac conditions.

14. Demonstrates organizational and time management skills to manage the daily patient schedule

15. Independently coordinates with the nursing supervisor, physician and other departments to organize testing on the weekends.

16. Perform all other duties as assigned.

What qualifications you will need:


  • Advanced Cardiac Life Spt must be obtained within 90 days of employment start date
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date
  • (RN) Registered Nurse for state of NH or valid compact licensure 
  • Associate Degree in Nursing
  • 1-3 years related experience
