Position SummaryThe Nurse Manager assumes 24 hour responsibility and accountability for the overall operations of assigned department(s). He/she provides the essential connection between the strategic plan/organizational goals and the point of care. Essential Functions and Responsibilities Includes the Following:Strategic Management Develop departmental goals and objectives that are aligned with the Nursing and hospital strategic plans Facilitate change by assessing readiness, involving staff and evaluating outcomes Collaborate with interdisciplinary team to align initiatives with that of a Magnet Organization Create and maintain a culture of shared governance, evidence based practice and innovation Manage contingency plans for internal/external disasters or emergency planning and execution Human Resource Management Understand and adhere to the WPH Performance Standards, Policies and Behaviors Evaluate staffing needs based on budgeted staffing plan, patient census and acuity Utilize behavioral based interviewing and peer interviewing for staff selection Serve as a coach and mentor to evaluate staff, assist with goal setting and implement continual performance development Facilitate staff education, ensures competency validations and promotes professional development of staff as well as succession planning Assure completion of staff orientation, annual and ongoing competency and education requirements. Focus on staff retention by assessing staff satisfaction, implementing strategies to address satisfaction issues, and developing methods to reward/recognize staff Ensure open communication with staff via daily huddles, staffing meetings and monthly staff rounding Follow progressive discipline and initiates corrective actions to counsel and terminate employees Financial Management Recognize the impact of reimbursement on revenue and maximize care efficiency/throughput Develop and submit operational as well as capital budgets and analyzes/reports variances Responsible for management of FTE component of staffing budgets included ongoing evaluation of productivity Forecast future revenue and expenses Performance Management Develop evidence-based standards of care, policies and procedures as needed Assure ongoing performance improvement including identifying key performance indicators, establishing data collection methodology, and evaluating data outcomes Ensure service excellence initiatives for customer and patient satisfaction by utilizing effective Nurse Leader Rounding with appropriate follow-up and action plans Responsible for patient safety by monitoring/reporting sentinel events, participates in RCAs and managing incident reporting through Midas Maintain survey and regulatory readiness to ensure compliance with governmental, state, and accreditation standards Adhere to New York State Nurse Practice Act and the ANA Code of Nursing Ethics Relationship Management Promote team dynamics and apply communication principles to manage conflict Act as a change agent and role model professional behavior Identify issues that require immediate attention and apply principles of crisis management to handle situations as necessary Technology Understand and evaluation the effect of information technology on patient care and delivery systems Use information systems to support daily operations and drive performance (ie: LEM, Optilink, Kauffman Hall, Midas, PolicyTech, TeleTracking) Personal/Professional Accountability Attend and participate in programs or activities to maintain current level of knowledge and expertise Manage through education advancement, continuing education, career planning and annual self- assessment and action plans Influence the practice of nursing and leadership through participation in professional organizations Performs all other related duties as assigned. Education Experience RequirementsCurrent New York State Registered Nursing License/Registration Baccalaureate in Nursing (BSN) required BLS certification (through American Heart Association) required ACLS certification (through American Heart Association) preferred unless required by employees in the department supervised, then the certification is required Certification in area of specialty, or CNML (Certified Nurse Manager and Leader) preferred but must be obtained within three (3) years of hire into Nurse Manager role Demonstrates a basic knowledge of management skills Core CompetenciesCommunication Skills Teamwork Adaptability Planning, Organization Delegation Skills Problem Solving, Judgment Decision Making Skills Quality/Safety Awareness Physical/Mental Demands/Requirements Work EnvironmentMay be exposed to chemicals necessary to perform required tasks. A copy of the SDS data base can also be found at the hospital switchboard, saved on a disc. Must be able to move about the department and hospital constantly while attending to needs of patients, visitors and staff. Requires continuous communication with patients, staff and visitors of all educational levels. Requires frequent use of computers and other office equipment. Required to move objects up to fifty (50) pounds and must be able to move patients of all weights with a minimum assist of one (1) or assistive device/equipment per White Plains Hospital Safe Patient Handling Policy. Must be able to rapidly assess and respond to situational needs of patients, staff and visitors. Must be able to adapt to a high stress environment with frequent interruptions.
