Job Description: DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is an entry-level professional nursing position which functions in a County department such as the Health Department or the Department of Mental Hygiene. The services are professional in nature and require substantial specialized judgement and skills within the framework of a prescribed care and treatment plan. Depending upon work location, duties may include rendering care in the patient's home, or working on the day, evening or night shifts or on weekends and holidays. Also depending upon work location, general supervision may be received from higher level titles such as Public Health Nurse or Nursing Supervisor. Supervision may be exercised over lower level titles such as Licensed Practical Nurses or Home Health Aides. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: 1. Assesses patient nursing care needs; 2. Prepares, implements and evaluates a nursing care plan; 3. Administers medications and prescribed treatments to patients; 4. Demonstrates nursing care to patients and their families; 5. Identifies physical and emotional dysfunctions of patients through observation of patients and analysis of health care records; 6. Coordinates plans for care with the nutritionists, social workers, physical therapists, physicians, and other professional health workers; 7. Counsels and guides patients and families in the prevention of illness and in the attainment and maintenance of maximum health; 8. Provides nursing services in clinics and schools; 9. May supervise Licensed Practical Nurses, Home Health Aides, etc.; 10. Completes various forms and reports on each case for departmental records and for health insurance reimbursement purposes; 11. Maintains essential nursing case records and reports; 12. Does related work as required. Requirements: FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of current professional nursing practices; working knowledge of the principles and practices of nursing as it relates to the particular field of employment, i.e. institutional nursing, public health nursing, etc.; skill in the application of current nursing procedures and techniques; ability to maintain competency and to keep abreast of latest developments in the field; ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others; ability to perform duties in accordance with the ANA Code for professional nurses; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Completion of a course of study approved by the New York State Education Department as qualifying for Registered Professional Nurse. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: 1. Eligibility for a New York State Registered Nurse's License at time of application. Possession of said license at time of appointment. 2. Depending upon the particular department and work assignment, incumbents may be required to be eligible for a New York State Motor Vehicle Operator's License at the time of application. Possession of said license may be required at time of appointment. Additional Information: The Registered Professional Nurse is a Civil Service non-competitive title, Grade 13, with the starting hourly rate of $32.83 per hour. This is a part time position up to 15 hours per week. DCC is an AA/EOE employer.
