You may be floated a bit and overwhelmed at times. The Cerner charting is not my favorite. The people working there are good team members. There’s is a lot to do in the area when off duty.

Doctors ask the nurses to do everything  on top of heavy assignment. Poor communication. Then nurse to patient ratios are always maxed and then as a traveler we would be cancelled almost weekly and they do not pay on-call. They  call and cancel the first 2 hrs of your shift start and say we will call you back in 2 hrs for final word and if they do tell you to come in it’s not considered “call back” pay

I’m a X-Ray tech. Staff friendliness to travelers is good. Most are welcoming.  It’s almost always busy to the point of having to make time to go to the bathroom. They do make a point of having everyone take a lunch. I was getting about $2200 a week/net, the cost of living for me was less. They rotate all the radiographers through different areas of radiology (no travelers in fluoro usually), ED, OR, floor portables, NICU, PACU, CVICU, peds, and women’s. There are 6 different towers of rooms. The hospital has over 1000 patient beds (including NICU and Peds) and an ED that has over 100 beds. Rarely, if ever, is the worklist empty. They use Cerner EHR and Synapse PACS. They use Carestream portables and for a couple rooms. OEC C-arms. They have 2 O-arms. They also have mini’s for OR and ED use. You can easily walk 6 miles in a 10 hour shift.

Compensation was fair and offered differentials for nights and weekends as well as overtime. Loved my fellow nurses, CNAs, and support staff but management could be better, more supportive, less condescending and scrutinizing. Amenities and equipment were nice.

I did not have a good experience at Banner. If it’s in your contract to be canceled one shift a week, they will make sure to do it. They are 4:1, and they will give you all four patients at the same time—and if you’re opening a zone (typically mid shift), you will likely have no help/tech. The charge nurses are all new ER nurses/new nurses in general, so do not understand acuity/triage. The average age of the patients seen here is around 84–mostly total care. They are coming from nursing homes/facilities, so a lot of them are total care and have sepsis, and again, you typically get all four patients at the same time with zero help. Average length of stay is around 5-6hrs per patient. I genuinely thought I would lose my license here.

Charge nurses have 2+ units so you hardly see them, rarely available to help. Staff is rude and treat travelers poorly.

Majority of my fellow nurses were helpful. Management had no clue what was going on most of the time and turned a complete blind eye to major problems. There was no accountability or communication.

Long Term Acute Care

If you are going to this facility, make sure you have guaranteed hours through your travel agency. My agency was aware of the call offs at this hospital and still did not offer guaranteed hours. It was disappointing

Banner cut my pay a few weeks into my contract by $600/week. They had unsafe nurse:patient ratios.

There was one charge nurse for 4 units.  Impossible for that charge to assist/help or have an idea of what is going on with patients.  I was told ratios were 5 on nights but we often had 7 or 8 patients.  ED doesn't call report and often transport doesn't tell you a patient is in the room.  Many heparin drips I found and had no idea they were in the room.  So unsafe.  It was our responsibility to keep an eye on the track board on nights to see if we had an admission coming plus take care of our patients.  I will never work at Desert Medical again.
