The staff on the Heart and Vascular Institute unit were amazing. Very appreciative to have a big number of travelers to fully staff their unit. The CHI Health system is what’s making me give a low score. They cut all the travelers at the same time, dropped the rates significantly, and hoped that we would make a decision in a few days time to stay.

Majority of staff were travelers. High patient ratio 6:1 always and PCTs mostly used as sitters. RNs do vitals, blood sugars and patient care. Discharge planner helpful but rarely time to catch up before new admission. Epic version used extremely slow and charting took longer due to this. Patients assignment was spread across 60 bed unit. Very unsafe as they were many fall risks. Overall staff was kind and nice but management not helpful. Strong culture of everyone fend for themselves. Only unit I have worked on where being floated to another unit was a welcome change.

PACU - Post Anesthesia Care

I was on a travel assignment working in PCU unit. Everything that was told to me in the interview sounded too good to be true and it was. First, I was scheduled every weekend or part of every weekend when I was told every 3rd weekend. They do not allow blocked schedules so your spread out throughout the week and everyone is swapping after schedule is made. Never had CNAs on the floor and when there was one only thing they are responsible for is blood sugars. You will be running around answering call lights, taking patients to the bathroom do baths then trying to catch up on your actual RN work. Meanwhile techs and CN sitting on their phones all day. Management not very nice but was told she doesn’t like travelers. You could say good morning and she would just walk by you with a bad look. Never any supplies you have to walk all over the hospital to find things you need, even nutrition room is never stocked. They will come after you for everything if you are late on vitals, if you didn’t do a patients bath, management says no patient can refuse (her words!) I can say that I did float a few times to med surge and OBs and the techs on those floors were very helpful and so was the charge nurses. Ratios for PCU 4:1 and med surge and OBs 5:1.
