Kuakini ED has some of the hardest working staff I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with. The equipment is outdated, scheduling is rough, but the sweet patients, & solid team members make it worth being there.

Don't get me wrong I love being able go work where I grew up in. But coming from high standards of working in southern California for the entirety of my field, this hospital had a lot of red flags for me; the reusing of isolation PPE, dinosaur aged medical machines (they have an addressograph used for labeling in the ER!), pagers from the 80's, no restriction bands for patients with restrictions!!, and RNs who refuse to draw labs when capable while starting IVs even when they know they need blood work for their patient in the ER! Not only that, but I've noticed this hospital has a lot of travel Healthcare professionals on here. This hospital is dying due to bigger, advanced hospitals in the surrounding areas and it reflects on the work ethic of the permanent employees there. Yes some are amazing at their job, but most aren't.

There are always going to be some bad eggs in any job.

If you want to work in an outdated hospital, come to Kuakini.  Manager of surgical services was a control freak and did little to promote a positive culture.  Will never step foot in hospital as a patient or employee again.

First, I want to say I understand each hospital has their own policies and procedures and I understand it is our job as travelers to adapt to those. However, when I am qualified to do many things but told I can only do vitals, EKGs, stock, clean, and transport, I feel like my skills are useless. This hospital is small, old school, and ill-equipped. The manager of the ED likes to micromanage and walk around flaunting his GUCCI clothing. I did not see him help with a patient once, but rather stand in the doorway asking if help was needed or telling you what you could be doing. The ED can become overwhelmed at times, especially with only 1-2 providers. As an ER tech, if you want a day off you need to find your own coverage because they only hire 4 techs at a time. The coordinators can sometimes tech, but they rarely do. The rotating schedule is draining: days, mids, and nights… 8 hour or 12 hour, but never 3x12s. The hospital is older, therefore seem stuck in their ways of doing things, and that goes with the community attitude as well. If you want to go back to paper charting, this is for you. The cost of living is so high that the pay is almost never worth it unless traveling with others you can split the costs with. Beautiful island, not so beautiful hospital.
