I worked in surgery. I can say that the staff and Nurse managers are amazing people! The director of surgical services is also over just about all specialty services and seems to have unrealistic expectations. She doesn’t make any effort to even acknowledge her own staff by name. It’s quite unfortunate because this team busts their butts daily with little to no appreciation from admin. Surgery is where a hospital’s bread is buttered. These people deserve AT LEAST a good morning! I found her nothing less than pompous and rude!

As OB we have to float a lot if our census is low. I floated 8 of my first 12 shifts

It was a dangerous environment , the nurses were over worked and making mistakes that cost people lives . I’ve seen more people die here than any other assignment

<h3>Assignment Overview</h3><ul><li>Shift: Nights, 3x12hrs</li><li>Hours: 36 hrs/wk</li><li>Start Date: Jul 13, 2026</li><li>Length: 12 weeks</li><li>Openings: 1</li></ul><h3>Description</h3><p>American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Labor &amp; Delivery (LDRP) position at a small community hospital in Maine, requiring a ME or Compact RN license and comfort with all phases of antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum, and well-baby care.</p><h3>Details</h3><ul><li>Night shift position, 7P–7A, 36 hours per week</li><li>12-week contract</li><li>Small community hospital with 64 beds and a Level III Nursery averaging approximately 200 deliveries per year</li><li>LDRP unit with 4 Labor beds and 4 Postpartum beds — the same RN covers Antepartum, Intrapartum, Postpartum/Couplet care, and well-baby care throughout the patient's stay</li><li>Rooming-in model with no dedicated nursery or nursery RN — the bedside RN is responsible for newborn care</li><li>Patient population is primarily low-risk OB; all high-risk labor and delivery patients are transferred out</li><li>Common patient types include postpartum hemorrhage, pre-eclampsia, HELLP syndrome, hyperbilirubinemia, NAS babies, and feeders/growers</li><li>Unit also receives low-acuity Med/Surg overflow patients (e.g., IV antibiotics, swing bed, rehab); no infectious or telemetry patients</li><li>Patient ratios follow AWHONN guidelines: 1:2 laboring, 1:1 active labor, 1:3–4 couplets, 1:2–3 Med/Surg overflow</li><li>Charting via Cerner EMR</li><li>Every other weekend rotation required</li><li>No on-call responsibilities</li><li>Holiday rotation every other holiday</li><li>Floating to MS or ED is for task assistance only — no patient assignment taken</li></ul><h3>Requirements</h3><ul><li>Active ME or Compact RN license required</li><li>Required certifications: BLS, ACLS, NRP, and Intermediate or Advanced Fetal Monitoring</li><li>STABLE certification required (must be completed within 30 days of start if not already held)</li><li>Minimum 2 years of L&amp;D experience required; first-time travelers considered with at least 3 years of L&amp;D experience</li><li>Experience with all phases of LDRP care: antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum/couplet, and well-baby care</li><li>Skills required include shoulder dystocia management, epidural management, nitrous oxide, intrathecal spinal analgesia, and neonatal care (VS, thermoregulation, hypoglycemia, bilirubin, NAS)</li><li>Cerner EMR experience preferred</li><li>Flu vaccination required for employment eligibility</li><li>Two professional references within the past year required, with at least one from a supervisor, manager, director, or charge nurse (peer references not accepted)</li><li>Full SSN, Driver's License, and copies of all certifications required for consideration</li><li>Candidates must not have previously worked at any Northern Light Health Hospital in a permanent capacity</li><li>Permanent address must be 100+ miles south/southwest of Bangor, ME to qualify for travel status</li></ul><h3>Additional Information</h3><ul><li>Candidate must be comfortable caring for low-acuity Med/Surg overflow patients in addition to OB patients — this should be confirmed prior to offer</li><li>Candidate must be comfortable with all phases of LDRP care and well-baby responsibilities — this should be confirmed prior to offer</li><li>RN will attend C-sections solely to receive the baby and provide neonatal care; circulating C-sections is not required</li><li>Unit is staffed with at least 2–3 nurses overnight; support includes a charge nurse, midwife (primary care provider), OB on call, phlebotomy, HUC (4 days/week), RT 24/7, and hospitalist 24/7; no CNA on unit</li><li>Orientation consists of general hospital orientation plus 1 shift on the unit</li><li>Scrubs may be any color but must be professional; procedural scrubs are provided for OR use only</li><li>Free parking available on site</li><li>All RTO requests must be submitted at the time of consideration and require manager approval</li><li>Interviews conducted via Simplifi platform</li><li>First-time travelers are considered for this position with a minimum of 3 years of L&amp;D experience</li></ul>
