The Cleveland Clinic is huge and are not shy about being the #1 heart program in the nation. Everyone is an expert in surgery and know their surgeons very well. The down sides are that I did not have many permanent staff checking on me during vases, and that the best compensation comes with doing 4x12’s, and if you ask to reduce it to 3x12’s then the facility cuts the hourly rate dramatically.

I worked on the epilepsy unit and it was amazing learning about epilepsy and non epilepsy.

Staff on some units is very petty but I guess people are people everywhere. Ratios on MS floors are 1:6, you will be placed in float pool even though your contract does not specify that, they have Panera and Starbucks open 24/7 if you like these places. White scrubs, $45/month parking for night shift, 2 day orientation on the unit(s), Baxter pumps, Epic, you will be expected to draw labs even though they have phlebotomy. Overall, it is worth it to give it a shot and see if it is a good fit for you and possible extend.

Leadership is incredibly disorganized and are very helpful only if they decide they like you. I happened to be liked by management and higher ups, but I saw a lot of really good phlebs who were hard workers who were treated poorly- their concerns dismissed, an unwillingness to compromise, tendency to not follow through with promises. The workload is about what is expected for a large hospital, and expectations were mostly reasonable even with chronic understaffing. In busier zones, it was not unusual to complete 30-50+ draws per 8-10 hour shift. The pay is about industry standard, but it is still inadequate to the cost of living. Raises are yearly and small. Bonuses are non-existent. Voluntary overtime was strictly not allowed. No incentive pay was offered. There was talk of trying to implement incentive but had not yet been approved by the time I left. The best part of the job was my fellow phlebs, especially on my shift. We were very much a team, and everyone could be relied on to do their part and were happy to help each other. As with most other facilities, access to butterflies was strictly limited. We would occasionally run out of basic things such as tourniquets or certain tubes and have to borrow from the floors, which was technically not allowed. The communication between nursing leadership and lab leadership of expectations was poor, and there were often conflicts and miscommunication by nursing staff as to what was appropriate to expect from each other. However, most individual nurses were very professional and appreciative. The only definite perk was the benefits package. My only complaint in that regard is that you must be married to add a partner to the health plan. Every other facility I worked for allowed domestic partners on the coverage, so this came as a bit of a blow. However, the coverage and flexibility of the health plan for full-time employees was good.
