I switched from travel in Baltimore to staff at UMMC and honestly I love my job. Going staff let me change specialties from bedside to procedures which has been rad. The staffing struggle is real - only one staff RN in the whole cath lab!!! - and I'm convinced it's because their HR is basically useless and they stuggle to hire and onboard. There are quite a few chill travelers . Lots of new grads trying their best. Coworkers are friendly. A lot of people seem to get away with not doing their jobs. Good news is it's easy to look like you're going above and beyond just by having a work ethic. Baltimore is a cool city and the culture is very "live and let live." Hospitals in Baltimore seem to make a lot more effort to meet the needs of vulnerable people who are homeless, have addiction, or have mental disabilities and that is refreshing. Stepdown transplant RNs have been having a hard time with ethically messy cases - patients pushed too far beyond their comfort just to reach 1 year when they are declining so much... it's a mixed bag. They do share/shadow time when hiring staff so you can get the low down on the unit from current staff.

PACU is more like IMC. You’re holding patients. Staff are generally kind and helpful with the exception of a few. Area is not safe. Parking is expensive and far from hospital.

The people are amazing there, but… you have techs that can help you, but would rather be on their phones. They love helping in the critical situations only when it means you are doing things, but they don’t want to draw blood, hook your patients up the monitors, do the ekgs, or basic tech stuff. Everything is left up to you. Management says they are trying to change the culture, but I have seen nothing. Not only that, there are certain charges that will let you drown or take chances with your pt falling or even get upset for doing the right things for your pts. Just no support depending on the day.

UMMC Downtown Campus has increasingly been cutting staff numbers, thereby increasing workload and making the acuity in an assignment higher. Compensation is lower than other local Baltimore hospitals. Great coworkers though - the people are what make it tolerable. Bonus and incentive pay have all been nixed. They don’t exist anymore and they are cutting OT. Pros: top-notch trauma experience, looks good on resume, decent health insurance, great coworkers. Cons: unsafe ratios, low pay, sad maternity coverage.
