Valley Children’s Hospital was a great assignment. The Respiratory staff and Respiratory Management were exceptional. The workload was not too heavy and when the workload did get a little heavy, the other staff members and the lead would always ask if you needed help throughout the shift. Also, they had the most up-to-date equipment. The Respiratory Department, the Nursing Department, and the Physicians worked together as a team to take care of the patient. I recommend this Hospital to anyone looking for a good travel assignment or even a full time position.

The travel pay for this area was great compared to some other options. Travelers make, in my opinion, what they should (base pay, travel/livings costs, and specialty/incentive pay). Some hospitals in this area tried to pay travelers less than staff. This is a “real” PICU and the nursing culture is very teamwork oriented.
That being said, this organization HIGHLY undervalues their nurses. The executive leadership is in the top of compensation nationally, while the nurses are some on the lowest paid in the state. They have successfully, yet unethically, maintained the culture that it’s okay to not be paid as a nurse. To give you an idea I was making well OVER TWICE what a 5 year staff RN was making AFTER my company took their margins. Whatever you do DON’T talk about money! Downplay your wage if any staff asks.

Great Pay, Great Team, Undervalues Staff

The management is picky and you are OFTEN floated to various other Pediatric units with nearly adult children who have complicated diagnosis such as cystic fibrosis. You are given the most complicated patients on these pediatric units. It was a very stressful contract.

I floated all the time and would get unsafe assignments as a NICU nurse. I would get kids as old as 21 which was ridiculous. They didn’t care if you told them it’s out of your scope of practice either.

They hired me as NICU but used us to staff the pedi floors
