  • Prior travel experience required: at least 1 year of travel

Unit Details

  • Currently telemetry only. Stepdown is not applicable at this time, and no return date has been given.
  • 20 beds, all private rooms, on the 2nd floor
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:5 for telemetry patients
  • 10 rooms have hardwired monitors; the rest are portable telemetry-monitor capable
  • Monitor techs on the 6th floor watch all units and call the assigned nurse about issues. Nurses are expected to understand basic dysrhythmias and verify telemetry strip interpretation.
  • Patient types are highly variable: telemetry, post-catheterization, medical/surgical with telemetry monitoring needs, and respiratory difficulty
  • Daily volume varies from 1-2 to 10 discharges and admissions
  • Designated charge nurse; the charge nurse is removed from staffing to support the unit when fully staffed
  • 2 PCTs for 20 beds. PCTs ambulate patients, perform fingerstick blood sugars, vitals, bathing, I&O documentation, and feeding and turning. Q2-hour rounding is shared with nurses.

Clinical Support and Practice

  • Point-of-care testing: blood sugar using an AccuChek glucometer. Competency is completed through the managers, and staff badge and patient armband are used for barcode scanning.
  • Pharmacy: unit-based pharmacist 7a-3p, 5 days a week; main pharmacy covers 24/7. Nurses reconstitute antibiotics. Telemetry patients may require heparin titration.
  • Omnicell access is set up by pharmacy, with fingerprint access granted by the managers.
  • Respiratory therapy is in the building 24/7. Nurses may give nebulizers, though RT is nearly always available. No ventilators are on the unit; nearly all other O2 delivery methods are used.
  • At least one covering hospitalist is available 24/7. No on-call on this unit.
  • Nurses place IVs and draw labs from central lines only with an order. No other IV requirements.

Scheduling and Floating

  • Hired for day or night shift. Extra shifts may be picked up, but nurses will not be made to work a different shift.
  • Block scheduling is available depending on unit needs. Travelers may self-schedule.
  • Every other weekend is required. Day shift works Saturday/Sunday; night shift works Friday/Saturday.
  • Every other holiday is required: Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's.
  • May float to a comparable or lower-level unit (telemetry or med/surg). Occasionally staff help with admitted boarded patients in the emergency department or with floor/telemetry patients housed in the ICU.
  • Travelers may be asked to precept or charge, depending on their comfort level. This is discussed first, and the request is respected if there is no comfort level.

Orientation

  • Day 1: blend of required education modules and shadowing. Go to the corporate center for a badge and parking pass, then to the 2nd floor on the main campus.
  • Day 2: orientation shift
  • Day 3: independent shift

  • Previous permanent candidates must have been gone for 2 years.
