Job Summary

The Clinical Nurse provides competent clinical nursing care consistent with professional standards. Reporting to the Nurse Manager/Director, the Clinical Nurse is responsible for coordinating and delivering patient care utilizing the nursing process in a hospital setting.

Essential Duties

• Education:
  • Participates in identifying and meeting learning needs of self.
  • Attends education programs based on identified learning needs.
  • Utilizes patient education materials relevant to the patient population with assistance.
  • Assesses readiness to learn of the patient, family, and caregivers.
  • Evaluates the developmental level of patients and factors affecting their ability to learn.
• Evaluation of Care:
  • Identifies expected patient outcomes.
  • Seeks guidance as needed in revising the plan of care.
  • Participates in discussions with interdisciplinary team members in evaluating patient care.
  • Communicates relevant information to promote continuity of care.
• Implementation:
  • Demonstrates competence in caring for patients with complex problems, addressing physical, psychosocial, educational, and safety aspects of care.
  • Performs bedside point of care testing as required for the patient care plan.
  • Utilizes organizational and nursing standards, policies, and procedures in care delivery.
  • Organizes and prioritizes care according to patient and family needs.
  • Consults with appropriate resources in a timely manner regarding complex care issues and high-risk discharge planning.
• Leadership:
  • Develops goals to promote professional growth with assistance or minimize limitations.
  • Achieves goals and objectives within the identified timeframe or renegotiates with the supervisor.
  • Participates in developing and achieving unit goals and performance improvement activities.
  • Effectively uses communication systems.
  • Participates in promoting cost-effective care.
  • Provides feedback to co-workers.
  • Stays informed about public policy and regulatory guidelines affecting the healthcare environment.
  • Promotes a safe, clean, and secure hospital environment for all.
• Patient Assessment:
  • Recognizes relevant data from complex situations to determine priorities for care.
  • Includes appropriate physical, psychosocial, educational, and safety needs in assessments.
  • Synthesizes assessment data into meaningful information for communication to others.
  • Assesses and anticipates discharge needs of individual patients and families.
  • Develops relationships with families to enhance their ability to advocate for patients and themselves.
• Planning:
  • Collaborates with patients and families to prepare or update the plan of care.
  • Utilizes multidisciplinary resources in planning care.
  • Communicates effectively to convey care planning.
  • Identifies and addresses cultural and ethnic issues in patient care planning.
  • Demonstrates the ability to prioritize tasks for patients with complex needs.
• Research:
  • Reads relevant journals to enhance practice.
  • Engages with staff to assess applicability of new ideas and questions.

Required Skills & Experience

• One (1) year of nursing experience.

Education

• Required Education:
  • Nursing Diploma, OR
  • ADN or ASN from an accredited school of Nursing.
• Preferred Education:
  • BSN or MSN from an accredited school of Nursing.
