Job Summary

The Clinical Nurse provides competent clinical nursing care consistent with professional standards. Reporting to the Nurse Manager/Director, the Clinical Nurse is responsible for coordinating and delivering patient care utilizing the nursing process in a hospital setting.

Essential Duties

• Education:
  • Participates in identifying and addressing learning needs for self.
  • Attends educational programs based on identified learning needs.
  • Utilizes relevant patient education materials.
  • Assesses the readiness to learn of patients, families, and caregivers.
  • Considers the developmental level of patients and factors affecting their ability to learn.
• Evaluation of Care:
  • Identifies expected patient outcomes.
  • Seeks guidance when revising the plan of care.
  • Participates in discussions with the interdisciplinary team regarding patient care evaluation.
  • Communicates relevant information to promote continuity of care.
• Implementation:
  • Demonstrates competence in caring for patients with complex problems, addressing physical, psychosocial, educational, and safety aspects of care.
  • Performs bedside point of care testing as required by the patient care plan.
  • Utilizes healthcare organization standards, policies, and procedures in delivering care.
  • Organizes and prioritizes care based on patient and family needs.
  • Consults appropriate resources in a timely manner for complex care issues and discharge planning.
• Leadership:
  • Develops goals to promote professional growth and minimize limitations.
  • Achieves goals and objectives within identified time frames or renegotiates with the supervisor.
  • Facilitates intra/interdepartmental collaboration.
  • Participates in the development and achievement of unit goals and performance improvement activities.
  • Utilizes communication systems effectively.
  • Contributes to promoting cost-effective care.
  • Provides feedback to co-workers.
  • Maintains awareness of public policy and regulatory guidelines impacting the healthcare environment.
  • Promotes a safe, clean, and secure environment for all.
• Patient Assessment:
  • Recognizes important data from complex situations to prioritize care.
  • Considers physical, psychosocial, educational, and safety needs.
  • Synthesizes assessment data before communicating with others.
  • Assesses and anticipates the discharge needs of patients and families.
  • Develops relationships with families to empower them to advocate for themselves and the patient.
• Planning:
  • Collaborates with patients and families to prepare or update care plans.
  • Utilizes available multidisciplinary resources in planning care.
  • Employs a variety of communication methods to convey planning information.
  • Addresses cultural and ethnic considerations in patient care planning.
  • Prioritizes tasks for patients with complex problems effectively.
• Research:
  • Reads relevant journals that contain applicable studies or articles.
  • Brings ideas and questions to the staff for evaluation of applicability in practice.
