Job Summary:

The Clinical Nurse provides competent clinical nursing care consistent with professional standards. Reporting to the Nurse Manager/Director, the Clinical Nurse is responsible for coordinating and delivering patient care utilizing the nursing process within a hospital setting.

Essential Duties:

Education:

• Identifies and meets learning needs for personal and professional development.
• Attends educational programs based on identified learning needs.
• Utilizes patient education materials relevant to the patient population with assistance.
• Assesses readiness to learn of patients, families, and caregivers.
• Evaluates the developmental level of patients and factors affecting their ability to learn.

Evaluation of Care:

• Identifies expected patient outcomes.
• Seeks guidance as needed in revising plans of care.
• Engages in discussions with interdisciplinary team members regarding patient care evaluations.
• Communicates relevant information to promote continuity of care.

Implementation:

• Demonstrates competence in caring for patients with complex issues, addressing physical, psychosocial, educational, and safety needs.
• Performs bedside point-of-care testing as required for the patient care plan.
• Follows organizational and nursing standards, policies, and procedures in care delivery.
• Organizes and prioritizes care based on patient and family needs.
• Consults timely with appropriate resources regarding complex care issues and discharge planning.

Leadership:

• Develops goals to enhance professional growth or address limitations with assistance.
• Aims to achieve goals and objectives within identified time frames or renegotiates as necessary.
• Facilitates intra/interdepartmental collaboration and participates in achieving unit goals and performance improvement initiatives.
• Effectively utilizes communication systems and promotes cost-effective care.
• Provides constructive feedback to co-workers.
• Maintains awareness of public policy and regulatory guidelines impacting the healthcare environment.
• Promotes a safe, clean, and secure environment for all.

Patient Assessment:

• Recognizes data from complex situations to prioritize care effectively.
• Includes appropriate physical, psychosocial, educational, and safety needs in assessments.
• Synthesizes assessment data into a coherent whole for communication with others.
• Assesses and anticipates discharge needs of individual patients and their families.
• Builds relationships with families to empower them to advocate for their patients’ needs.

Planning:

• Collaborates with patients and families to create or update care plans.
• Utilizes multidisciplinary resources in planning care.
• Employs a full range of communication strategies to convey planning details.
• Identifies and addresses cultural and ethnic issues in patient care planning.
• Demonstrates the ability to prioritize tasks for patients with complex care needs.

Research:

• Reads relevant journals and articles to enhance practice knowledge.
• Shares ideas and questions with staff for collective assessment of applicability.

Skills:

Required Skills & Experience:

• Minimum one (1) year of nursing experience.

Education:

• Required: Nursing Diploma or ADN/ASN from an accredited school of Nursing.
• Preferred: BSN or MSN from an accredited school of Nursing.

Certifications & Licensure:

• Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider certification (AHA or ARC).

Preferred Certifications & Licensure:

• ACLS - AHA
• NIHSS
• PALS - AHA
