Job Summary

Provides competent clinical nursing care consistent with professional standards. Reporting and accountable to the Nurse Manager/Director, the Clinical Nurse is responsible for coordinating and delivering patient care utilizing the nursing process in a hospital setting.

Essential Duties

• Education:
  • Participates in identifying and meeting learning needs.
  • Attends education programs based on identified learning needs.
  • Utilizes patient education materials relevant to patient population, with assistance.
  • Assesses patient/family/caregivers' readiness to learn.
  • Evaluates the developmental level of patients and factors affecting their ability to learn.
• Evaluation of Care:
  • Identifies expected patient outcomes and seeks guidance for care plan revisions as needed.
  • Engages in discussions with interdisciplinary team members regarding patient care evaluations.
  • Communicates relevant information to ensure continuity of care.
• Implementation:
  • Demonstrates competence in caring for patients with complex problems, including their physical, psychosocial, educational, and safety needs.
  • Performs bedside point of care testing as necessary for patient care plans.
  • Follows organizational and nursing standards, policies, and procedures in care delivery.
  • Organizes and prioritizes care according to patient and family needs.
  • Consults timely with relevant resources on complex care issues, teaching needs, and discharge planning for at-risk patients.
• Leadership:
  • With assistance, develops goals for professional growth or to address limitations.
  • Aims to achieve goals within specified time frames or renegotiates with supervisors as needed.
  • Participates in development and achievement of unit goals and performance improvement initiatives.
  • Effectively utilizes communication systems and promotes cost-effective care.
  • Provides constructive feedback to colleagues.
  • Stays informed about public policy and regulatory guidelines impacting the healthcare environment.
  • Ensures a safe, clean, and secure environment for all.
• Patient Assessment:
  • Recognizes complex data to prioritize care needs.
  • Considers physical, psychosocial, educational, and safety requirements in assessments.
  • Synthesizes assessment data into a comprehensive overview prior to communication with others.
  • Anticipates discharge needs of individual patients and families.
  • Develops relationships that empower families to advocate for patients’ and their own needs.
• Planning:
  • Collaborates with patients and families to prepare or update the plan of care.
  • Utilizes multidisciplinary resources for effective care planning.
  • Employs comprehensive communication strategies in planning efforts.
  • Identifies and addresses cultural and ethnic considerations in patient care planning.
  • Demonstrates the ability to prioritize tasks for patients with complex issues.
• Research:
  • Reads relevant journals to incorporate applicable studies or articles into practice.
  • Presents ideas and inquiries for group assessment and applicability within the staff.
