Job Overview

We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Registered Nurse for a Medical Surgical unit. The ideal candidate will have experience in various nursing skills and be prepared to provide high-quality patient care in a fast-paced environment.

Required Skills and Certifications

• Minimum of 2 years of experience in a comparable role
• Traveler experience accepted, 1st time travelers welcome
• Local candidates accepted

Core skills include, but are not limited to:

• Medical/Surgical care
• Telemetry - remote monitoring
• Use of Rapid Response Team
• Interpretation of dysrhythmias
• IV insulin protocols
• Colostomy care
• Feeding tube care and management
• Pre/Post Hemodialysis management
• Blood product administration
• Central line blood draws
• PICC line management
• Starting IVs
• Management of chest tubes and non-invasive airway management
• Isolation precautions and wound care

Certifications required:

• BCLS

Preferred Skills and Certifications

• Experience in Telemetry and Management of dysrhythmias
• Telemetry monitoring on the unit
• Insulin management
• Understanding of CVA and surgical drains
• Interpretation of ABGs and tracheostomy management
• Familiarity with EPIC electronic health record system

Job Details

The Registered Nurse will work with a target patient ratio of 1:5-6 and will be responsible for 12-hour day shifts. Candidates should be available for 36 or 48 hours per week with contracts ranging from 13 to 26 weeks.

It should be noted that contract staff may be assigned to a Storm Team and/or Hurricane Team and may be required to report to work during a catastrophic event, mass casualty, or disaster. There is also a potential for consolidation to a centralized office mid-contract, and staff may be preassigned to various units as needed.

Scheduling Requirements

• Maximum of 7 days of requested time off (RTO)
• Floating to other units may be required
• Weekend shifts required, 12-16 per contract

Patient Population

The patient population will include individuals diagnosed with conditions such as dementia, diabetes, COVID-19, pneumonia, COPD, sepsis, encephalopathy, GI bleeds, anemia, and hip fractures. The unit will also accommodate typical medical/surgical diagnoses.

Special Procedures and Unit Details

This unit contains an isolation area for COVID patients and provides multi-level care, including stepdown, which is overseen by dedicated stepdown staff, not medical/surgical staff.

Unit Systems

The following systems will be utilized:

• Pyxis for medication management
• Epic for documentation
• SBAR for communication

Orientation

Unit orientation will consist of 24 hours, with hospital orientation occurring during the first week. Travelers must be available for classes each day of the orientation period.

Dress Code

The dress code requires navy and white scrubs.

Must pass EKG testing prior to the start for this specialty.
