Job Description

The Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) provides essential information for diagnosing, treating, and preventing diseases through the conduct of medical laboratory tests, procedures, experiments, and analyses, adhering to established accreditation guidelines and quality control standards.

Responsibilities

• Conduct chemical analyses of blood, urine, spinal fluids, and gastric juices to determine normal and abnormal components of body fluids.
• Analyze blood cells by counting and identifying cells using microscopic techniques and procedures.
• Prepare blood, plasma, and platelets for transfusions by performing blood group, type, and compatibility tests.
• Ensure the operation of laboratory equipment by calibrating devices, completing preventive maintenance, troubleshooting issues, and maintaining equipment inventories.
• Manage laboratory supplies by monitoring inventory levels, anticipating needs, placing orders, and confirming receipt of supplies.
• Utilize laboratory resources effectively while ensuring optimal use of equipment and supplies.
• Provide information on medical technology by responding to inquiries and requests.
• Prepare reports of technological findings through the collection, analysis, and summarization of information.
• Maintain professional and technical knowledge through educational workshops, professional publications, and participation in professional societies.
• Comply with all established Quality Assurance/Quality Improvement (QA/QI) standards.
• Ensure a safe and sanitary working environment by adhering to infection control protocols and hazardous waste policies.
• Identify and address problems effectively by determining causes and implementing appropriate solutions.
• Perform other related duties as directed.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 2 years of experience as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) is required.
• Experience in blood banking is required.
• Certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) is required.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required.

Work Schedule

This position requires a commitment to four 10-hour shifts per week (40 hours guaranteed) and includes weekend rotation every other weekend.
