Description

Medical Surgical Oncology Registered Nurse (RN)

This unit specializes in caring for patients undergoing chemotherapy and is seeking qualified travelers committed to excellence in oncology nursing. Candidates who are not yet chemotherapy certified must be willing to obtain the ONS Fundamentals of Chemotherapy and Immunotherapy Administration certification prior to or during their assignment. The cost of certification is covered by the facility.

Job Details

  • Shift: 3x12 (1845-0715)
  • Contract Length: 13-26 weeks
  • On-call duties: Required, may involve reporting during scheduled shifts
  • Weekend work: Required; every other weekend
  • Floating: Required to similar units and alternative care locations
  • Patient Ratios: 1:6

Role Responsibilities

The registered nurse will provide care for patients receiving chemotherapy, monitor their conditions, and administer required treatments. Responsibilities include:

  • Monitoring patients with diagnoses such as AKI, Sepsis, Cancer, and Septic Shock.
  • Administering chemotherapy and biotherapy via IV, oral, or injection methods.
  • Handling wound care including surgical drains and management of various medical devices.

Qualifications

  • Active BLS certification required.
  • ONS Fundamentals of Chemotherapy and Immunotherapy Administration certification preferred.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in an inpatient setting is required.
  • First-time travelers are welcomed.

Skills Required

Applicants should possess experience in:

  • Medical/Surgical care, including colostomy care.
  • Accessing ports and managing central/peripheral lines.
  • Administering blood products and performing blood draws.
  • Special procedures such as managing chest tubes and IV management.
  • Implementing isolation precautions and wound care management.

Unit Information

The unit maintains a high level of patient care, especially during increased census. Contract staff will be integrated with home unit staff to ensure comprehensive coverage. Attendance at monthly staff meetings is required, and unit orientation will be 24 hours (2 shifts).

Unit Systems

The following systems are utilized within the unit for medication administration, documentation, and communication:

  • PYXIS
  • EPIC
  • SBAR

Scrubs

Standard scrubs will be navy blue and white.

Special Considerations

  • Contract staff may be required to participate in response teams during catastrophic events or disasters.
  • Attendance and participation are essential to ensure a cohesive unit.
