Position Overview
This unit specializes in the care of patients receiving chemotherapy and is seeking travel nurses who are either chemotherapy certified or committed to obtaining certification prior to or during their assignment. Certification can be acquired via the ONS Fundamentals of Chemotherapy and Immunotherapy Administration and the facility offers onsite training.
Shift Details
Shifts are scheduled for 3x12 hours, typically from 0645 to 1915. Longer contracts ranging from 13 to 26 weeks may be considered. Call is required, and there is a mandatory weekend rotation every other weekend. Floating to similar units and alternative care locations may also be necessary.
Key Responsibilities
- Caring for patients who have received chemotherapy.
- Monitoring and administering medications, including chemotherapy, biotherapy, and blood products.
- Managing central and peripheral access lines.
- Providing wound care and management of surgical drains and lines.
- Adhering to hospital protocols, including isolation precautions and patient safety measures.
Qualifications
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
- Two years of experience in a medical-surgical setting required.
- Experience with oncology care and chemotherapy administration preferred.
- First-time travelers are welcome to apply.
Skills Required
- Knowledge of colostomy care and blood product administration.
- Experience with central line blood draws and management, including PICC line care.
- Competence in the management of insulin drips, heparin, surgical drains, chest tubes, and non-invasive airway management.
- Effective communication and documentation skills using PYXIS and EPIC systems.
Patient Population
The primary patient population includes individuals with general medical-surgical diagnoses, as well as management of patients with acute kidney injury (AKI), sepsis, cancer, septic shock, and other critical conditions.
Unit Orientation
A 24-hour orientation (equivalent to two shifts) will be provided to ensure familiarity with unit operations and protocols.
Additional Requirements
- Attendance at monthly staff meetings is mandatory.
- Must pass EKG testing prior to the start of employment.
Attire
Required scrubs are navy blue and white.
Special Notes
Contract staff will be part of designated Storm and Hurricane Teams and may be required to work during natural disasters or large-scale emergencies. Staff will cover patient care shifts alongside home unit staff to maintain continuity of care.
