Position Overview
The Echo Technologist is responsible for performing high-quality diagnostic echocardiographic procedures under the direction of a Cardiologist. This role involves utilizing ultrasound equipment to assess cardiac structures and functions, providing crucial information for the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular conditions.
Essential Job Functions
- Perform transthoracic (TTE), transesophageal (TEE), and stress echocardiograms as per protocol, American Society of Echocardiography (ASE) guidelines, and physician orders.
- Operate ultrasound and diagnostic imaging equipment to acquire high-quality cardiac images while utilizing contrast agents and agitated bubble techniques when appropriate.
- Demonstrate strong knowledge of cardiac anatomy, pathology, and sonographic principles to recognize normal and abnormal echocardiographic findings.
- Analyze echocardiographic data and prepare preliminary findings for the interpreting Cardiologist.
- May start and manage intravenous (IV) lines for contract echocardiography, subject to credentialing and training.
- Collaborate closely with Cardiologists and other healthcare professionals to ensure quality patient care.
- Explain procedures to patients, ensuring their comfort and safety throughout the process.
- Review and evaluate images for clarity, completeness, and diagnostic value.
- Maintain accurate patient records, documentation, and reports within the PACS or EMR system.
- Maintain equipment, perform quality control checks, and promptly report malfunctions.
- Comply with infection control, HIPAA, and patient safety standards.
- Stay current with continuing education and new echocardiographic techniques.
- Participate in continuous quality improvement initiatives and accreditation processes.
- Support the organization’s mission, vision, values, policies, and procedures.
- Participate in required education programs as applicable to the position.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Education: Graduate of a Diagnostic Medical Sonography program with a focus on Cardiac Sonography.
- Licenses/Certifications: Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) through ARDMS or Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) through CCI; BLS certification required.
- Experience: Minimum of 1 year of experience as an Echo Technologist; 3 years preferred. Experience with a range of echocardiographic techniques, including Stress and TEE, is preferred.
- Additional Training: CRASE training may be required if the travel assignment extends beyond a 6-month period.
Physical Requirements
This position requires sufficient auditory ability to detect various sounds, including patient alarms and verbal communication. Clear communication is essential for interaction with patients, families, and healthcare team members. Visual acuity is necessary for monitoring patient conditions and documentation. Tactile perception is important for assessing physical characteristics during patient care. The role involves occasional stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling and requires the ability to lift up to 50 pounds independently, with frequent lifting, repositioning, and handling of objects or patients. Team assistance or mechanical aids should be utilized when transferring individuals weighing over 100 pounds.
Working Conditions
The Echo Technologist operates primarily in an indoor healthcare environment, subject to variable indoor temperatures. There is frequent exposure to infectious diseases and hazardous materials, with an expectation to follow safety protocols and utilize personal protective equipment (PPE). The work setting can be fast-paced and unpredictable, requiring rapid responses in high-pressure or emergency situations, while handling multiple demands and varying levels of noise from medical equipment and patient activity.
