Job Description

The Surgical Technologist assists during surgical procedures by maintaining the integrity of a sterile surgical environment and providing necessary instrumentation to the surgical team. This role involves participation in unit activities to ensure high standards of patient care while functioning under the guidance of a Registered Nurse.

Essential Job Functions

• Demonstrates proficiency in sterile and aseptic techniques, along with knowledge of human anatomy and surgical procedures to perform invasive therapeutic and diagnostic interventions, adhering to AORN standards.
• Maintains and verifies all surgical items for proper packaging, processing, sterility indicators, integrity, and expiration dates to maximize patient safety during procedures.
• Monitors the sterile field for contamination events and coordinates corrective actions as needed.
• Works towards competency with Tier 1 surgical cases.
• Maintains flexibility to contribute effectively to the individualized, ongoing delivery of care within the designated scope of practice.
• Communicates effectively with the perioperative team and actively participates in Time Out processes, including briefings and debriefings.
• Assists with patient transport, room turnovers, and preparation for procedures.
• Exhibits professional behavior by staying updated on new technologies and surgical procedures, including instrumentation and equipment.
• Prepares instruments for terminal sterilization and ensures cleanliness.
• Embraces and exemplifies the principles of a Just Culture in the workplace.

Other Duties

• Performs additional responsibilities as assigned while complying with HIPAA regulations.
