Description
The Speech Language Pathologist collaborates with residents and other healthcare providers to deliver Speech Language Pathology services aimed at maximizing residents' functionality and independence in daily activities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Support and promote the mission and values of the healthcare ministry.
- Perform evaluative and therapeutic procedures under the direction of a physician or other qualified healthcare provider while adhering to safety precautions and guidelines.
- Conduct evaluations and provide treatment for communication disorders and dysphagia, including modified barium swallow assessments.
- Assess residents in accordance with department protocols and create a therapeutic plan of care with defined functional goals and treatment frequency.
- Engage with residents and primary caregivers to gather input on therapeutic plans.
- Consult with referring physicians and other healthcare team members regarding residents' therapeutic and discharge requirements; participate in relevant team meetings.
- Monitor treatment progress and adjust plans to achieve functional goals, modifying care as needed.
- Document all evaluative and therapeutic interactions with residents, ensuring clarity and accessibility for the care team.
- Recommend and facilitate the acquisition of appropriate communication and swallowing assistive devices for residents, providing instructions for their use.
- Educate residents and caregivers effectively and document their understanding and responses.
- Understand Medicare, Medicaid, and reimbursement regulations.
- Maintain clinical knowledge and skills, sharing expertise with staff and offering in-services as needed.
- Assist in the development of new Speech Therapy programs and services.
- Stay current with professional updates through memberships and publications, sharing pertinent information with staff.
- Maintain required licenses, certifications, and competencies, completing compliance courses promptly.
- Ensure coverage for Speech and Language services effectively.
- Uphold a clean and organized workspace, adhering to infection control standards.
- Perform other duties consistent with the role as needed.
Job Requirements
Knowledge and Skills
- Strong verbal, written, and presentation communication skills.
- Team-oriented and supportive member of healthcare staff.
- Excellent interpersonal and customer service abilities.
- Adept at analytical thinking and sound decision-making.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
- Ability to collaborate effectively within an interdisciplinary team.
- Exceptional time management and documentation skills.
- Compassionate, resident-centered care approach.
- Proficiency in speaking, reading, writing, and understanding English.
Education and Experience
- Master's degree in Speech Language Pathology required.
- Current Speech & Language Pathologist license required.
- Certificate of Clinical Competence required.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification preferred.
- Prior experience in long-term care or skilled nursing facilities preferred.
Working Conditions and Physical Demands
The role demands the ability to perform physical tasks associated with the position, including a combination of sitting, standing, walking, bending, stooping, twisting, and reaching. The position may require lifting up to 50 pounds, with a two-person lift for weights exceeding that limit, and frequent lifting/carrying of up to 20 pounds. Some stress may be present due to the high responsibility for delivering quality care.
