Definition of Position

The Registered Nurse specializing in perioperative nursing practice during the intraoperative surgical experience is responsible for delivering safe, effective, and quality patient-family centered care in the operating room and other areas of perioperative services for all patient populations. The perioperative nurse serves as the patient advocate and oversees the direction and supervision of any assigned personnel. The position requires on-call availability for the Surgery Unit on a scheduled rotation.

Essential Job Functions

• Accept responsibility for the direction, control, and planning of activities.
• Make evaluations and decisions based on measurable or verifiable criteria.
• Work independently and implement the plan of care by:
  • Protecting patients from injury caused by extraneous objects and chemical, electrical, laser, mechanical, and thermal sources.
  • Performing accounting procedures to prevent unintended retention of surgical items.
  • Ensuring the correct site, side, and level for procedures.
  • Managing patient specimens in accordance with organizational policies and procedures.
  • Communicating the patient's status to relevant parties throughout care.
  • Administering medications safely and accurately.
  • Maintaining patients' wound and tissue perfusion at or above baseline levels.
  • Preserving the status of patients' bodily systems and fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base balances.
  • Implementing interventions to prevent surgical site infections.
  • Protecting patients' rights, dignity, and privacy.
  • Providing culturally competent, ethical care that adheres to legal standards.
  • Ensuring consistency in patient care across various settings.
• Document nursing care accurately, completely, and legibly.
• Collaborate effectively with other disciplines as necessary.
• Utilize problem-solving and conflict resolution skills to foster positive team interactions.
• Maintain required competencies and pursue professional growth, including participation in professional organizations.
• Act as a patient advocate while maintaining confidentiality of individuals and health information.
• Support the organization's mission, vision, values, policies, and procedures.
• Participate in required education for relevant programs applicable to the position.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education

• Required: Associate of Science in Nursing.
• Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in nursing.

Licenses/Certifications/Registrations

• Required: Current RN license in Oregon, BLS, ACLS, & PALS Certification, TNCC.
• Preferred: CNOR, Peri-op 101, CRASE training.

Experience

• Required: None.
• Preferred: Previous RN circulator experience, completion of Peri-op 101 course, scrub experience.
