In the absence of active patients in the Obstetrics Unit, the RN will be assigned to provide care in the Med/Surg unit, ensuring appropriate staffing levels and continuity of care. This role requires the ability to adapt to varying patient assignments, clinical expertise, and a commitment to patient-centered care across multiple units.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assure quality of care by adhering to therapeutic standards and facility standards of care.
  • Provide comprehensive care to obstetric patients, including care for laboring mothers, postpartum recovery, and newborns.
  • Assist with labor and delivery, including fetal monitoring, medication administration, and patient education.
  • Monitor maternal and fetal well-being, recognizing and responding to complications.
  • Educate patients and families on postpartum care, breastfeeding, and newborn health.
  • Collaborate with physicians, midwives, and other healthcare professionals to ensure safe and effective care.
  • Assess, plan, and implement nursing care for adult patients with medical and surgical conditions.
  • Administer medications, IV therapy, and wound care as per physician orders.
  • Monitor patient progress, document assessments, and adjust care plans accordingly.
  • Assist with post-operative recovery, chronic illness management, and acute care interventions.
  • Respond to emergencies and coordinate with interdisciplinary teams to achieve optimal patient outcomes.
  • Communicate effectively with diverse age groups, ethnicities, educational levels, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Demonstrate strong organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks accurately and efficiently.
  • Make nursing decisions within the scope of licensure and according to established hospital policies and procedures.
  • Attend at least 75% of nursing staff meetings and participate in available in-service education for professional growth and development.
  • Foster a compassionate environment by providing emotional, psychological, and spiritual support to patients and their families.
  • Promote patient independence through the establishment of care goals and education on condition management and self-care skills.
  • Document patient care services accurately in patient and department records.
  • Maintain continuity among nursing teams through diligent documentation and communication of actions, irregularities, and ongoing needs.
  • Delegate and oversee tasks assigned to nursing assistants and support staff.
  • This job description may change at any time at the discretion of the supervisor.

Additional Requirements

  • Able to work weekends, holidays, and shift rotations as needed.
  • Maintain good physical, emotional, and mental health.
