Located about 20 miles south of Nashville, Franklin offers lots of small-town charm with its historical heart on and around Great American Main Street that runs through the 16-block downtown area. It's fun just to wander, with many magnificent homes and mansions, including impressive antebellum architecture. Explore the shops, galleries and restaurants, visit local distilleries to sample Tennessee whiskey and catch a show at the historic Franklin Theater. History buffs have much to uncover, including the Carter House, riddled with bullet holes from the Battle of Franklin during the Civil War. The Carnton Plantation, which served as a hospital during the war, is open to the public for tours. When you want to get active, head to Timberland Park, which offers scenic trails for hiking, picnic areas and a butterfly garden.
