Description

The University of Miami has an exciting opportunity for an Ophthalmic Technician 2 in the LASIK and Laser Vision Center with Bascom Palm Eye Institute in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

The Ophthalmic Technician 2 assists the ophthalmologist by gathering basic data pertaining to the patient’s visual status and maintaining an environment conducive to the delivery of efficient, quality eye care. The Ophthalmic Technician 2 also performs appropriate clinical testing techniques to detect visual deficiencies.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS:
• Prepares exam rooms for daily clinical activities.
• Monitors and maintains the appropriate levels of minor equipment, dry goods, and pharmaceuticals in clinic.
• Responsible for detailed documentation in the EMR system.
• Tests patient's far acuity, near acuity, peripheral vision, depth perception, and color perception.
• Examines eye for abnormalities.
• Applies drops to anesthetize, dilate, or medicate eyes.
• Measures intraocular pressure of eyes.
• Tests patient's field of vision, including central and peripheral vision, for defects, and charts test results on graph paper.
• Measures axial length of eye using ultrasound equipment.
• Completes intravitreal injection (IVI) preparation for patients.
• Administers placement of hard and soft contact lenses.
• Performs technical workups and special testing.
• Serves as a Certified Ophthalmic Scribe or a Certified National Study Ophthalmic Technician. Assist with training and onboarding clinical support staff.
• Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS

Education:
High School diploma or equivalent

Certification and Licensing:
Basic Life Support (BLS)
Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT/COA) or
Certified Ophthalmic Scribe (OSC)

Experience:
Minimum 3 years of relevant experience

• Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail.
• Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work under pressure while meeting deadlines.
• Ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion.
• Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.

• Ability to work independently and/or in a collaborative environment.
• Proficiency in computer software (i.e. Microsoft Office).

Department Specific Functions:
The Laser Vision Correction Technician will assist the Optometrists and Ophthalmologists by conducting all Laser Vision evaluations and assisting in Laser surgery. The incumbent will possess skills of a minor OR technician and senior ophthalmic technician performing with a high degree of excellence for quality and proficiency.

• Documents patients medical history, performs technical workups and conducts special testing
• Tests patients visual acuity, depth perception, and color perception
• Conducts a Retinoscopy Refraction, manifest and cycloplegic
• Performs tonometry and slit lamp assessments, measures intraocular pressure of eyes and measures axial length of eye using ultrasound equipment
• Performs other tests and measurements as requested by physician (i.e., PAM, Topography)
• Applies drops to anesthetize, dilate or medicate eyes
• Educates patient on laser vision procedures
• Conducts pre and post op vitals
• Prepares patients for surgery and ensures patients receiving updated post-operative instructions
• Assists in all laser procedures, elective and medically necessary
• Activates and deactivates Lasers, including Wavelight, Visumax, Exzimer and Femtosecond
• Identifies proper key cards to be used with different procedures and documents use
• Performs daily fluency test and calibration assessment to assure surgical parameters and proper laser function
• Sterilizes laser room, equipment and instruments
• Inputs all patient data into laser system to ensure proper documentation
• Orders and maintains surgical/clinical supplies and medications
• Documents procedures in log book
