Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) – School-Based Responsibilities

• Provide physical therapy interventions under the direction and supervision of a licensed Physical Therapist.
• Implement established treatment plans designed to support students’ IEP goals and educational participation.
• Assist students with gross motor skills, mobility, balance, strength, coordination, posture, positioning, and functional movement.
• Deliver physical therapy services in individual, group, classroom, and other school-based settings.
• Support students’ safe participation in classroom activities, physical education, transitions, transportation, and other school routines.
• Assist students with the safe and appropriate use of adaptive equipment, mobility devices, and positioning supports.
• Observe and document student performance, progress, participation, and response to interventions.
• Communicate student progress, concerns, and changes in functional performance to the supervising Physical Therapist.
• Collaborate with teachers, families, administrators, paraprofessionals, and related service providers as directed.
• Participate in IEP and multidisciplinary team meetings when requested and permitted by district policy and state regulations.
• Maintain accurate service logs, treatment notes, and other required documentation in accordance with district, state, and federal requirements.
• Follow the supervising Physical Therapist’s plan of care and promptly report any need for reassessment or treatment-plan modification.
• Promote student independence, safety, and access to the educational environment and curriculum.

Qualifications

• Associate degree from a CAPTE-accredited Physical Therapist Assistant program.
• Active Massachusetts Physical Therapist Assistant license or eligibility to obtain licensure before the assignment begins.
• Successful completion of the National Physical Therapy Examination for Physical Therapist Assistants and any other applicable state requirements.
• Previous pediatric or school-based physical therapy experience is preferred.
• Experience implementing treatment plans and maintaining accurate service documentation is preferred.
• Knowledge of adaptive equipment, mobility supports, and educationally relevant physical therapy services is preferred.
• Ability to work effectively under the direction and supervision of a licensed Physical Therapist.
• Ability to meet all district onboarding, background screening, and health requirements.
