Unit -Stepdown/MedSurg
# Beds: 29 bed unit that is currently under construction. All beds will be step down equipped with an opening in first quarter 2026
Nurse:Patient Ratios: Ratios for step down 3:1, floor 6:1
Required Certifications (i.e., BLS, ACLS?)
Common diagnoses/Types of patients
- Flex unit: Serves both floor and step-down patients, based on patient and hospital needs.
- Diverse patient population with primarily medical diagnoses - medicine unit
Experience or 'Must have' skills: Looking for new and experienced nurses; We need the candidates to be able to handle a 6 patient (med-surg) or a 3 patient (stepdown)
MUST HAVE EPIC EXPERIENCE
Are RNs required to titrate drips?: RNs will have orders written to titrate drips.
Common titratable &/or set rate drips: Heparin, insulin, anti-hypertensives, antiarrythmics, phenobarbitol, ketamine, morphine/dilaudid/fentanyl PCAs, TPN
Charge Nurse/House Supervisor? Does the charge nurse take an assignment?: Have charge RNs and House Supervisors 24/7. Charge RNs will likely taken an assignment when unit first opens, but the goal is to always run with a free charge RN.
Are there nurse aids on this unit/Ratios: There are nurse aids (we call them Clinical Associates or CAs here). The goal is to have 3 CAs at all times so the ratio would be 1:10
RT Equipment (vents, Cpap, BiPap, etc): Will see CPAP, BiPAP on floor and stepdown. Will see HiFlow and vents in stepdown; if vents need settings adjusted they go to ICU.
Are there Tele/Monitor Techs on this unit? Are RNs required to read their own strips? What brand are the tele monitors?: We have a remote telemetry surveillance center; we have central monitoring available on the unit. RNs are not expected to read their own strips. We use Phillips telemetry monitoring equipment.
Shifts & Scheduling (Do you allow self-scheduling? Block scheduling?): 12-hour shifts. Block scheduling not a guarantee, but do my absolute best to give everyone what they request.
Weekend Requirements: Agency RN positions will be posted as weekend positions.
Holiday Requirements: Expect to work about half of all WVUH recognized holidays.
Is there call or a standby requirement?: No call or standby requirement.
Floating Requirements: First to float or be pulled to other floor/stepdown units.
Scrub Color/Dress code: Any combination of royal blue and white.
Unit/Department specific orientation:
