Description

American Traveler is hiring an experienced travel RN for a Labor & Delivery position requiring at least 2 years of L&D experience, active ME or compact RN license, and prior travel assignment experience.

Details

  • Night shift position, 7P–7A, 12-hour shifts, 36 hours per week
  • Level III NICU on site; unit averages approximately 1,800 deliveries per year with 4 scheduled events (C-sections, versions, etc.) daily
  • Unit includes 7 labor rooms, 2 triage rooms, 2 OR suites, PreOp/PACU within the labor room, and 25 Postpartum/Antepartum/GYN/Mother-Baby beds
  • Common patient diagnoses include PIH, GDM, pre-eclampsia, eclampsia, HELLP, shoulder dystocia, postpartum hemorrhage, multiples, fetal loss, drug addiction, and cervical ripening
  • Patient ratios: cervical ripening and laboring 1:1–3, active labor 1:1, couplet/postpartum/antepartum up to 3 M/B couplets or 3 antepartum/NICU moms
  • EMR: Cerner with Fetal Link; IV pumps: Alaris; medication dispensing: Pyxis; fetal monitoring: Fetal Link (remote at bedside and nurses station)
  • Weekend rotation requires working at least 4 out of every 8 weekend shifts, which may be scheduled back-to-back
  • No on-call requirement, though picking up call shifts may be an option
  • Holiday coverage required on a rotation basis
  • May float to Mother-Baby for antepartum, postpartum, or occasional newborn nursery coverage (24-hour labs performed by core staff)

Requirements

  • Active ME or compact RN license required
  • Current certifications required: BLS, ACLS, NRP, Intermediate or Advanced Fetal Heart Monitoring (FHM), and MOAB
  • Minimum 2 years of Labor & Delivery experience required
  • First-time travelers not accepted; must have completed at least one prior travel assignment at a facility of comparable size and acuity
  • Required skills include: Pitocin titration, fetal scalp electrode placement, cervical exams, epidural assistance, management of insulin and magnesium drips, shoulder dystocia management, circulating C-sections and/or receiving baby in OR, neonatal resuscitation, IUPC placement and monitoring, and newborn/lactation support
  • Candidate's permanent address must be 100+ miles south/southwest of the facility to be eligible
  • Candidates must not have previously worked at any Northern Light Health Hospital in a permanent capacity
  • Two references within the past year required, with at least one from a supervisor, manager, or director (charge nurse acceptable; peer references not accepted)
  • Full SSN, copies of all certifications, and a Driver's License required for consideration
  • Flu vaccination required for clearance to start (medical exemptions only, subject to facility approval)

Additional Information

  • Responsibilities include titrating Pitocin, managing drips (insulin, magnesium), circulating in OR for C-sections, performing neonatal resuscitation, providing lactation support, and following safe skin-to-skin protocol
  • When a mother remains on the L&D unit for continuous surveillance (e.g., Mag x 24hrs), the labor nurse is responsible for documenting feeds, vitals, and assessments for the baby
  • Unit support includes 24/7 charge nurse, CST, anesthesia, house supervisor, RT, OB provider on call, family medicine residents with attending backup, and certified midwife coverage
  • Unit secretary and Bed Flow Facilitator are available on day shift only; phlebotomist available for subsequent labs after initial IV placement
  • Orientation consists of approximately 3 days: one day with HR/preceptor, one day of OR/PACU training, and one day on the contracted shift with a preceptor
  • Navy scrubs are required and provided on site via scrub machine (6 credits allotted); street clothes worn to and from the facility
  • Free parking available on site
