Description
American Traveler is hiring a Registered Nurse for a Progressive Care Unit position on 12-hour night shifts, requiring at least 1 year of PCU/Tele RN experience and a South Dakota or compact RN license.

- 56-bed Progressive Care Unit within a hospital setting
- Adult patient population with diagnoses including CHF, ARF, hepatitis, ESLD, DM, DKA, pneumonia, sepsis, GI bleed, syncope, chest pain, pulmonary emboli, respiratory failure, COPD, arrhythmias, seizure disorders, overdose, and delirium tremens
- RN patient ratio of 1:4 for PCU/Tele (days and nights)
- 12-hour night shift schedule with 36 hours per week
- Weekend rotation of every other or 50% weekends (Friday, Saturday, Sunday) per 4-week schedule
- Holiday coverage required every other holiday during the contracted timeframe
- Not scheduled for on-call hours, though may be placed on call related to low census
- Floating required to Med Surg, Ortho/Neuro/Surgical, Heart and Vascular Unit, Oncology, ICU (depending on experience), and Observation, in rotation with other travelers
- Uses Epic (preferred), Alaris, and Omnicell
- Required to attend huddle prior to shift start at 0625 and 1825 in the 7th floor conference room
Requirements
- Active RN license (South Dakota or Compact) required
- BLS and ACLS certifications required
- Minimum 1 year of PCU or Tele RN experience required
- Completion of an approved nursing education program required
- Cardiac rhythm interpretation skills required
- Experience with cardiac and vasoactive drip titration preferred (Heparin, Insulin, Cardizem, Amiodarone, Levophed, and occasionally Betablockers or antihypertensives)
- Skilled in IV starts, blood product administration, CIWA protocol, drain/tube management, and catheter insertion/management
- Experience with insulin drips (DKA and non-DKA), continuous bladder irrigation, and chest tube maintenance required
- Epic EMR experience preferred
- Strong clinical judgment, physical assessment skills, and professional bedside manner required
- First-time travelers considered if more than 2 years of experience
Additional Information
- Provide direct patient care including drip titration, wound/drain management, catheter care, and chest tube maintenance
- Work alongside LPNs in a team nursing model with possible task swapping based on scope of practice
- May be asked to precept nursing students
- Unit supported by 24/7 charge nurses, phlebotomy for peripheral draws, resource/flex RNs, respiratory therapists, hospitalists, and centralized tele monitoring
- Monthly audits conducted for pre/post pain scoring with a 90% compliance requirement
- Orientation includes 2 days of in-class/online education plus two 12-hour preceptor shifts
- Navy blue scrubs required for RNs
- Free parking available on-site
- Candidates must live at least 100 miles from any Monument Health facility to be eligible for the travel position
- Previous permanent staff must wait 1 year before returning as a traveler
- Time off requests limited to a maximum of 7 days, with contract extension required to complete a full 13-week schedule if time off is taken
- No RTO permitted during the Sturgis Bike Rally (first 3 weeks of August)
