Description

American Traveler is hiring a Registered Nurse for a PICU position requiring 1.5 years of PICU experience and a South Dakota or compact RN license.

Details

  • Work across both General Pediatrics and PICU on a combined 15-bed pediatric unit with a 5-bed PICU
  • Pediatric patients aged 0-18 plus stable adult overflow cases in Gen Peds
  • PICU patients require critical/intensive care for conditions such as respiratory failure, circulatory failure, infectious disease, endocrine/metabolic disorders, neurologic disease, toxic ingestions, trauma, and hematologic/oncologic disease
  • Patient ratios of 1:5 in Gen Peds and 1:1-2 in PICU
  • 12 hour variable shifts, 36 hours per week
  • Every other weekend rotation required
  • May be placed on low census/on-call status
  • Floating required to NICU (30 bed, feeder/growers, 1:3 ratio) and Gen Peds (up to 1:5 ratio)
  • Uses EPIC charting system and Omnicell medication dispensing

Requirements

  • Active RN license (South Dakota or Compact) currently in hand
  • Current certifications: BLS, PALS, and NIHSS
  • Minimum 1.5 years of PICU RN experience required
  • Completion of an approved nursing education program
  • Ability to perform physical assessments on patients from ages 0 to adult
  • Ability to titrate drips and care for mechanically ventilated patients
  • Proficient use of EPIC charting system

Additional Information

  • Provide direct patient care including medication administration, symptom and vital sign evaluation, and patient/family education on plan of care
  • Unit supported by CNAs (1:5 ratio), a floating charge nurse covering both units, resource/educator nurses, case management, social work, respiratory therapy, and hospitalist/APP support
  • RNs perform their own phlebotomy and IV starts, with ultrasound available for difficult IVs
  • One day of facility orientation (online and in-person) plus two days of unit orientation with a preceptor
  • All holidays must be covered
  • Time off requests only approved if pre-approved in advance
  • Navy scrub color required
  • Free parking available in a parking garage
  • Traveler-friendly culture with a strong learn-and-grow environment
  • First-time travelers considered only if they have more than 2 years of overall experience
