  • Contract Length: 13 weeks (extensions up to 52 weeks available)
  • Shift: Night shifts, 3x12-hour (18:45 - 07:15); option for 4x12s
  • Hours per Week: 36
  • Weekend Requirement: 6 weekend shifts per 6-week block or every other weekend
  • Holiday Requirement: At least one holiday per 13-week contract
  • Charting System: Epic (Epic experience required)
  • Orientation: 32 hours

PCU Registered Nurse Qualifications

  • Active RN license (Virginia or Compact State – travel nurse eligible)
  • Minimum 1 year of recent PCU/Stepdown nursing experience (post-open heart surgery experience required)
  • Certifications: ACLS, BLS, NIHSS (required for PCU RN jobs)
  • Proficient with Epic charting system
  • Ability to float to other PCU or Med-Surg units as needed
  • COVID-19 and Flu vaccinations required (medical/religious exemptions considered)
  • Strong cardiac monitoring and emergency response skills
  • Experience with cardiac drips (no titration), IV therapy, blood product administration, central/peripheral line care
  • Respiratory support skills (nasal cannula, oxygen delivery, non-invasive airway management)

PCU RN Responsibilities

  • Deliver high-quality nursing care to post-open heart and thoracic surgery patients in a PCU/Stepdown setting
  • Monitor and interpret cardiac rhythms, manage dysrhythmias, and activate Rapid Response/Code teams as needed
  • Administer cardiac drips (Cardizem, Heparin, Insulin, Amiodarone, Nitro, Bumex, Lasix, dopamine/dobutamine – no titration)
  • Perform IV therapy, phlebotomy, blood product administration, and central/peripheral line care
  • Provide respiratory support (CPAP, BiPAP, nasal cannula, oxygen delivery, non-invasive airway management)
  • Care for patients with chest tubes, tracheostomies, PICC lines, open wounds/drains, and LVADs
  • Float to other PCU or Med-Surg units as needed
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams including trauma residents, mid-level providers, and support staff
  • Maintain accurate, timely documentation using Epic
