Job Opportunity: Medical Surgical Registered Nurse

Location: Springfield, Illinois
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Details

  • Specialty: Medical Surgical Nursing with focus on Urology/Nephrology
  • Shift: Day shift (06:45 AM - 07:15 PM)
  • Unit Size: 25 beds, average daily census 23
  • Weekend Requirement: Work every other weekend
  • Floating: Floating to other Medical Surgical units within scope of practice required
  • Block Scheduling: May be accommodated but not guaranteed
  • Locals Accepted: Yes, no radius restrictions
  • On-call: Not required

Required Experience & Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Illinois
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Minimum 2 years of Medical Surgical nursing experience, including experience within the last year
  • Experience in Urology and Nephrology
  • Dialysis experience, including pre/post hemodialysis management and renal failure care
  • ACLS, BLS, and PALS certifications issued by the American Heart Association
  • National Tech Cert Verification
  • Orientation Safety Manual Acknowledgement
  • State License 1 Verification
  • NURSYS Verification (RN, LPN/LVN, AP)
  • Experience with blood product administration
  • Experience with central line blood draws and PICC line management
  • Experience starting IVs
  • Rapid response team emergency response skills and experience
  • Experience with chest tubes (Emerson/Pleur-evac)
  • Experience with CPAP/BiPAP and high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC)
  • Experience with non-invasive airway management
  • Experience with Cerner electronic health record system

Clinical Skills & Knowledge Requirements

  • Work Setting Experience: Medical/Surgical and Telemetry
  • Cardiac Monitoring & Emergency Response: Telemetry remote monitoring, use of Rapid Response Teams
  • Genitourinary/Renal Care: Pre/Post Hemodialysis management, renal failure care
  • IV Therapy/Phlebotomy: Blood product administration, central line blood draws, peripheral line care/management, PICC line management, IV starts
  • Medication Skills: Heparin administration
  • Respiratory Care: Chest tubes (Emerson/Pleur-evac), CPAP/BiPAP, High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC), nasal cannula, non-invasive airway management, oral suctioning, portable oxygen tank
  • Professional Knowledge: Isolation precautions, wound care including wound vac
  • Electronic Health Record: Experience with Cerner required

Additional Information

  • Guaranteed Hours: Client may cancel up to 36 hours per 13-week assignment without pay obligation; on-call shifts count as called-off shifts
  • Return to Office Restrictions: Ideally no more than 5 days
  • Scrub Color: Any solid color scrubs allowed
  • Parking: Permit required, no cost

Required Documentation & Compliance

  • Background checks covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years
  • Primary source verification of licenses and certifications
  • Physical exam within one year of start, including labs within 7 days of contract signing
  • Fit mask test required (specific mask types accepted)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within one year
  • Immunizations or proof of immunity for Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
  • Drug screening (9-panel) within 30 days of start
  • Flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required annually
  • Competency exam and skills checklist required for clinical candidates
  • Professional references (2) required for travel and acute care candidates

This position is ideal for experienced Medical Surgical RNs with strong clinical skills in telemetry and renal care, comfortable with a day shift schedule and floating within Med/Surg units. The role requires active Illinois RN licensure and foundational certifications, with a supportive environment for first-time travel nurses who meet experience requirements.
