Emergency Department Registered Nurse (RN) - Nightshift

Job Summary

The Registered Nurse delivers patient care through the nursing process in the Emergency Department, collaborating with patients, families, and healthcare teams to promote positive outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

• Assess and reassess patient clinical conditions using objective and subjective data
• Develop, implement, and evaluate patient care plans
• Utilize critical thinking for patient care and daily operations
• Demonstrate clinical competencies relevant to the unit
• Coordinate and provide patient and family education based on learning needs
• Manage, administer, and reconcile medications, including Omnicell and refrigerator monitoring
• Document patient care and interventions accurately and timely in the electronic health record (EHR)
• Delegate tasks appropriately according to skill level
• Triage patients using the Emergency Severity Index (ESI) algorithm
• Manage care, paperwork, and evidence for sexual assault victims
• Facilitate patient flow and prioritize/delegate patient care tasks
• Communicate clearly with First Responders (EMS) and participate in hospital code responses (Code Blue, Code Green, Express Team, etc.)
• Provide sensitive communication to patients and families experiencing trauma or tragedy
• Manage expired patients including notifications and coordination with coroner, funeral home, morgue, family physician, and police if required
• Safely manage behavioral health patients in acute crisis
• Manage patient transfers according to EMTALA guidelines
• Perform other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Education

• Graduate of an accredited school of nursing

Experience

• Preferred: More than 1 year of experience in a similar unit with comparable patient acuity

Certifications & Licenses

• BLS certification (required)
• ACLS certification within 1 year of hire
• PALS or equivalent within 1 year of hire
• De-escalation training (required)
• Current Illinois RN State licensure

Physical Demands & Abilities

• Ability to sit or stand for prolonged periods
• Regular exposure to body fluids and potential bloodborne/airborne pathogens
• Must wear PPE (mask, gown, gloves) as required
• Able to lift 25 pounds from floor to waist using proper body mechanics
• Able to transfer or position clients over 50 pounds with assistance or devices
• Ability to push/pull clients and medical equipment; perform CPR
• Frequent twisting, bending, stooping, kneeling, and reaching during patient care
• Manual dexterity for grasping, pushing/pulling, and fine manipulation
• Tactile sensation to feel vibrations, temperature changes, and pulses
• Visual acuity sufficient to read labels, prepare medications, and monitor equipment
• Ability to hear a forced whisper at 5 feet
• Emotional and mental stability to maintain therapeutic relationships and adapt to changing environments
• Ability to accept constructive criticism and recognize own limits

This position requires a professional nurse capable of managing complex emergency care situations with strong clinical skills, critical thinking, and effective communication.
