Job Summary: Registered Nurse - Operating Room (OR) - Contract Position

Specialty

Location

  • Milwaukee, WI (Level III Trauma Center, Level III NICU, Magnet Designation, Primary Stroke Center)

Facility Overview

  • 636 beds total
  • 21 OR beds
  • Patient ratio: 1:1
  • Experience required: Minimum 2 years
  • Not recommended for first-time travel nurses without prior approval

Contract Length

  • Approximately 13 weeks (89 days ≈ 13 weeks)

Required Certifications

  • Registered Nurse (RN)
  • BLS certification

Required Skills & Experience

  • Must know how to scrub in surgical procedures
  • Neuro/ENT surgeries including:
    • Spine surgeries: Laminectomies, ALIFs, Fusions, Discectomies
    • Cranial surgeries: Tumors, VP shunts, Subdural, EVDs (no setup required)
    • ENT surgeries: Neck dissections with flaps, Sinus surgery (Stealth Navigation), Tonsillectomy, Tympanoplasty
  • Navigation systems experience:
    • Medtronic (Cranial & Spine)
    • Medtronic Stealth (ENT)
    • Stryker & Synaptive Navigation (Cranial)
  • Orthopedic surgeries:
    • Fractures, Anterior hips, Total joints, Ortho spine, Hand/Podiatry
  • Experience with surgical equipment such as Hanna Table
  • General surgery experience including:
    • Breast/plastics, vascular, laparoscopic, oncology, genitourinary, gynecology, robotic surgery (da Vinci XI)
  • Note: Robotics training only for those with strong background and commitment beyond one contract

Orientation & Training

  • Orientation length: 1 to 1.5 weeks (varies by team and shift)
  • Cross-training to General Main OR specialty and Urology center
  • No floating to other hospitals or sites

Scheduling

  • Day shifts with variable start times between 5:30 AM and 7:00 AM
  • PM shifts depend on position
  • No weekend rotation required
  • Holiday weeks: Option to work four 10-hour shifts or take holiday unpaid

On-Call Requirements

  • 30-minute response time
  • 8-week call schedule (subject to change)
  • Call slots vary by shift and specialty (AMS and PM shifts)
  • Weekend call 1-2 weekends per schedule depending on specialty

Support & Environment

  • Support from charge nurses, leads, supervisors, and managers
  • Charting systems: EPIC, Alaris, Pyxis
  • Surgical scrubs provided; scrub caps allowed but must be covered by surgical bouffant
  • Free parking and shuttle service available
  • Food options on campus include Starbucks and cafeteria
  • No call rooms available

Additional Notes:

  • First-time travel nurses require further evaluation and approval
  • Strong emphasis on prior experience with robotic surgeries for those expected to work with robots
