ICU Nurse Opportunity - Bangor, ME

Facility Overview

  • Level II Trauma Center
  • 411 beds total
  • ICU beds: 26 (includes some negative pressure rooms)

Start Date

  • November 12th start needed

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years ICU experience
  • First-time travelers welcome

Patient Types

  • Medical, Surgical, Trauma, Neuro, Orthopedic, Interventional patients
  • Conditions include ICP monitoring, External Ventricular Drain (EVD), spinal precautions, DKA, multi-system trauma, sepsis, ARDS, COVID, pneumonia, COPD, stroke

Patient Ratios

  • Typically 1:2 based on acuity
  • May occasionally have 3 patients during transitions

Required Certifications

  • BLS
  • ACLS
  • NIHSS
  • PALS preferred (for possible float to PICU if experienced)

Skills & Experience

  • Neuro and trauma experience required (EVD & ICP monitoring)
  • Ventilator management, critical care drips, drain management
  • Stroke care, hemodynamic lines (A-lines, CVP)
  • Cardiac rhythm recognition, chest tubes, tracheostomy care
  • Strong assessment skills
  • PICU experience preferred but not required (may float to PICU if qualified)
  • Charge nurse experience should be noted if applicable

Unit Support

  • Charge nurse: Unassigned (may have critical staffing situations)
  • Resource nurse/house supervisor available 24/7
  • Respiratory therapist in-house 24/7
  • Hospitalist in-house 24/7
  • Intensivist available 24/7 for consults
  • Trauma surgery team manages their own patients
  • PT/OT available Monday-Friday

Charting System / Equipment

  • Cerner (preferred experience)
  • Alaris infusion pumps
  • Pyxis medication system

Floating Opportunities

  • Cardiac Care Unit (ICU) within scope
  • Cardiac Stepdown or Medical Stepdown units
  • PICU if pediatric experience and PALS certification

Orientation

  • General hospital orientation plus 1 shift on unit

Scheduling

  • Weekend rotation every other weekend
    • Dayshift: Saturday/Sunday
    • Nightshift: Friday/Saturday
  • No on-call responsibilities
  • Holiday work varies based on need; requests approved by manager
  • Time off requests approved by manager

Additional Notes

  • Scrub color: Any solid color, must be professional
  • Free parking in designated areas

Contract Length

  • 13 weeks (approximately 3 months)

Documentation & Compliance Requirements (examples)

  • ACLS, BLS, NIH Stroke Scale certification
  • Criminal background check, drug screen
  • Immunizations and titers (Hep B, MMR, Varicella, TDAP)
  • Physical exam and health screenings
  • Employment authorization and license verification
  • Annual core competencies and flu documentation
