Job Opportunity: MedSurg Nurse - 5 South (Hem/Onc)
Location: Jackson, Mississippi
Unit: 5 South Hematology Oncology (32 beds)
Contract Length
- 13 weeks
Unit & Patient Population
- Hematology/Oncology patients, including chemotherapy administration
- Common diagnoses: Hematology/Oncology, chemo patients
- Typical nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:5, sometimes up to 1:6; adjusted lower for higher acuity patients
Required Skills & Experience
- Level 1 trauma experience required
- Experience in a larger facility with high acuity patients and many surgeries preferred
- Comfortable managing lines, chest tubes
- Hem/Onc and chemo experience preferred but not required (manager will provide chemo training)
- EPIC charting proficiency required
- BLS certification required; ACLS required for charge RNs
Certifications & Requirements
- BLS required
- Flu vaccine required by November 15 (medical exemptions allowed with documentation)
- Fingerprint background check required (remote process takes 10 days; in-person available locally before start)
Clinical Responsibilities
- RNs may titrate heparin drips; amiodarone may be started before transfer to cardiac unit
- Telemetry available on all units; central monitoring stations communicate with RNs
- Charge nurses take light patient assignments and may take full assignments if needed
- Nurses read their own telemetry strips
Staffing & Support
- Charge nurse and house supervisor coverage:
- Nurse managers on-site M-F business hours
- Adult house supervisor evenings and weekends
- Nurse aides available on all units
- Respiratory therapy support available (CPAP, BiPAP at night; high flow on other units)
Scheduling & Shifts
- 12-hour shifts: 7am-7pm or 7pm-7am
- Block scheduling possible, managers try to accommodate traveler preferences
- Weekend requirement: typically every other weekend or 2 weekends per month (may vary)
- Holiday rotation with regular staff
- No call or standby requirements
- Floating required within skillset across all MedSurg units; higher acuity patients assigned to core staff
Orientation
- First day: paperwork, attestations, system logins (Omnicell, Epic), unit tour
- Followed by 2 additional shifts with a preceptor (12-hour night shifts)
Dress Code
- Solid color professional scrubs (any color)
