Neuro Med-Surg Acute RN Position

Location: Peoria, Illinois
Department: Neuro Med-Surg Acute
Unit Size: 54 beds (2 semi-private)

Job Details

• Contract Length: 18 weeks
• Shift: 12-hour shifts, one shift per day
• Schedule:

  • Weekend requirement: Every other weekend (Saturday and Sunday both shifts)
  • Holiday requirement: Every other holiday
• Call/Standby: None
• Floating:

  • Float in rotation with rest of staff on general unit
  • If floated outside general unit, only perform skills competent to do and work with trained nurse for that unit

Patient Care & Unit Information

• Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:

  • Day shift: 1:4-5
  • Night shift: 1:5-6
• Nurse Aids/Patient Care Techs:

  • Day & Evening: 1:9-10
  • Night: 1:10-12
• Common Diagnoses: Stroke, spine surgery, seizure, brain tumor, head injury, neuroscience cases, some medical overflow
• Telemetry: House-wide telemetry with Phillips monitors; nurses do not read their own strips
• Respiratory Equipment: High flow oxygen for stable COVID patients (rare); RNs troubleshoot only

Requirements & Qualifications

• Certifications:

  • BLS (AHA)
  • NIHSS
• Experience:

  • Must have level 1 trauma experience
  • Previous travel nursing experience required (no first-time travelers)
  • Prior experience on a dedicated neuro unit required
• Skills:

  • RNs required to titrate drips
  • Must have experience with heparin titrated drip based on PTT
• Orientation:

  • 2 days unit-specific orientation with educator and preceptor
  • 12 non-billable orientation hours

Additional Information

• Charge nurse present 24/7, generally does not take patient assignments unless short staffed
• House supervisor available 24/7
• Dress code: No scrub color requirement; tattoos must be covered; only ear piercings allowed
• Drug-free campus; negative drug screen required
• Local placements accepted within 50-mile radius
