Oncology Acute RN Position - Peoria, Illinois
Unit and Patient Information
- Department: Oncology Acute
- Unit Size: 19 beds, all private
- Patient Types: All cancer types (most common: Lymphoma, Leukemia), Hematology, medical patients, radiation oncology, Gyn/Onc
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:
- Days: Typically 1:5 (can vary 1:4-5)
- Nights: Typically 1:6 (can vary 1:5-6)
- 1:1 staffing for specific medications/therapies
Required Certifications and Experience
- Certifications:
- BLS (AHA)
- ONS/ONCC Chemotherapy Immunotherapy Certificate
- Experience:
- IV chemotherapy and immunotherapy regimens and administration
- Handling chemotherapy precautions (PPE)
- Monitoring for medication side effects
- Medication Administration:
- RNs do not titrate drips; medication adjustments require physician orders
- Common set-rate drips include heparin and chemotherapy (e.g., 24-hr Methotrexate bags)
Staffing and Support
- Charge Nurse: Present 24/7, generally does not take patient assignments but may occasionally
- House Supervisor: Present 24/7
- Patient Care Technicians (PCTs):
- 3 PCTs on day shift (0700-1930)
- 2 PCTs on night shift (1900-0730)
- Respiratory Therapy Equipment:
- Bipap (only if patient’s home regimen)
- Cpap (RT manages both Bipap and Cpap 24/7)
- Telemetry:
- House-wide telemetry with Phillips monitors
- RNs do not interpret telemetry strips
Scheduling and Shifts
- Shift Length: 12-hour shifts
- Shift Times: 0700-1900 or 1900-0700
- Scheduling:
- Flexible based on unit needs; may split contract between days and nights or nights only
- Self-scheduling with coordination for requests
- Schedule finalized on a 6-week cycle
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (Days: Sat/Sun; Nights: Fri/Sat)
- Holiday Requirement: Every other holiday
- Call/Standby: None
- Floating: Included in float rotation; floating shifts typically 4+ hours; rotation based on fairness
Orientation and Policies
- Orientation: 24-36 hours, unit-specific
- EMR System: Epic Beacon
- Drug-Free Campus: Negative drug screen required for all panels
- Scrub Code: No specific color required
- Local Placement: Accepts clinicians within 50-mile radius
Contract Length
- 13 weeks (approximately 3 months)
This position is ideal for RNs with oncology experience, particularly in chemotherapy and immunotherapy administration, who are comfortable with flexible scheduling and working in a specialized acute oncology unit.
