Labor and Delivery Nurse Position Overview
Facility Type: Teaching Hospital (Level 1 Trauma)
Unit: Labor and Delivery (OB Specialty)
Unit Size: 14 LDR beds / 3500 deliveries per year
Patient Population: High Risk OB patients, newborn stabilization, antepartum, postpartum
Age Range: 12-50 years
Experience & Certification Requirements
- Minimum 2 years clinical experience (Level 1 trauma experience preferred)
- Minimum 1 year clinical experience in OB specialty
- Certifications Required: BLS
- Certifications Preferred: AWHONN Intermediate Fetal Monitoring
- Active Compact or Arkansas nursing license required
Work Schedule & Orientation
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
- Shifts: Three 12-hour shifts per week
- Shift Hours: 0630-1900 or 1830-0700
- Weekend Rotation: Up to every other weekend (may be every weekend after onboarding)
- Holiday Rotation: Required
- Call: None
- Orientation: 2-3 days
Unit Staffing & Support
- Nurse to Patient Ratio: 1:2
- Ancillary Staff: CNA/PCT present (varies per shift), Unit Clerk/Secretary (1 per shift)
- Advanced Practice: Certified Nurse Midwife on unit
- Floating Required: Yes (to Post-Partum/Antepartum units as needed)
Clinical & Procedural Details
- Circulate during C-sections (no scrub role)
- Unit Specific Procedures:
- Oxytocin, Magnesium Sulfate, Insulin infusions and other medications
- Starting IVs and drawing labs on mothers and babies
- Equipment:
- Alaris pumps, epidural pumps, SCDs, fetal monitors, infant warmers
- Respiratory and anesthesia support available 24/7
- Respiratory manages ventilators
Documentation & Systems
- Documentation System: EPIC
- Medication System: Pyxis
Dress Code & Policies
- Scrubs provided (Caribbean Blue)
- Closed-toe shoes required
- Jewelry, hair, beard, and nail polish per facility policy
Additional Notes
- No local candidates; must live 100+ miles from facility
- COVID vaccination not required
- All compliance documents due 2 weeks prior to start date
- Manager interview required before offer
