Surgical Acute RN Position - Peoria, Illinois
Contract Length
- 13 weeks
Unit Information
- Department: Surgical Acute
- Beds: 63 total (49 private, 9 observation)
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:
- Day shift: 4-5 patients per RN
- Night shift: 5-6 patients per RN
- Charge Nurses: 2 per shift, do not take patient assignments
- House Supervisor: Available 24/7
- Patient Care Techs (PCTs):
- Day: 7-10 patients per PCT
- Night: 10-15 patients per PCT
- Duties: Vitals, accu checks, ADLs, turning, ambulation
Patient Population & Care
- Common diagnoses: Post-op surgical, trauma, overflow medical
- Common tasks: Dressing changes, wound care, IV therapy, pain management, drains, NG tubes, central lines, TPN
- Experience required: Post-op care, critical thinking, good bedside manner, team player
- Drip titration: RNs do not titrate drips except Heparin (common drip)
- Respiratory Therapy Equipment:
- No ventilators
- CPAP and high flow oxygen available
- RT manages nebulizers; RNs manage inhalers and CPAP placement
- Telemetry:
- Some patients on telemetry with Phillips monitors
- Monitor techs read strips; bedside RNs do not
Scheduling & Shifts
- Shift times:
- Days: 07:00 - 19:30
- Nights: 19:30 - 07:30
- Scheduling:
- Block scheduling considered with approval
- Travelers do not self-schedule
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend (Saturday and Sunday)
- Holiday requirement: Rotate every other holiday
- Call/Standby: None
- Floating:
- Travelers float first
- Float to units matching experience level
- ICU RNs floating to general units take a team of 3 patients
Orientation & Training
- Orientation includes:
- 2 shifts with preceptor
- One 12-hour shift for EPIC and professional orientation with unit educator
- Non-billable orientation hours: 12 hours
Certifications & Requirements
- Required certification: BLS (AHA)
- Active Illinois nursing license or proof of application required
- Drug-free campus: Negative drug screen required for all panels
Additional Notes
- Local placements accepted within 50-mile radius
- Scrub color: Any color allowed
- OSF Call Off Policy: Equivalent of 12 hours off every 13 weeks without penalty
This position is ideal for RNs experienced in post-op surgical care who are team-oriented and comfortable working in a fast-paced acute surgical unit.
